Job description:

The University of Vienna is internationally renowned for its excellence in teaching and research, and counts more than 7,500 academics from all disciplines. This breadth of expertise offers unique opportunities to address the complex challenges of modern society, to develop comprehensive new approaches, and educate the problem-solvers of tomorrow from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The Faculty of Physics at the University of Vienna invites applications for a

Tenure-Track Professorship in Aerosol Modelling51 Faculty of Physics
Working hours: 40 | Collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. A2

Reference no.: 6010

The position

The University of Vienna is seeking an excellent candidate for a tenure-track position in the field of aerosol modelling. The position is situated within the research area Aerosol Physics and Environmental Physics with great opportunities for research synergies with the existing groups both at the Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy. The main research direction is the modelling of aerosol properties over the whole particle size spectrum, complementing existing experimental research at the aerosol group. Possible areas may span from particle microphysics and mixing state to optical, radiative and aerodynamic properties, aerosol-cloud interaction, and transport effects in small and large volumes (e.g., instrumental inlets, atmosphere). Candidates with a strong background in the topical areas of atmospheric aerosol science, aerosol optics, aerosol radiative properties, aerodynamics, irregularly-shaped particles (e.g. mineral dust, volcanic ash, soot, microplastics etc.), and atmospheric aerosol modelling will be preferred. The successful candidate will develop their own line of research, expanding the vibrant research environment of the group and increasing its impact and visibility.

The Aerosol Physics and Environmental Physics (AEP) Group at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Vienna combines laboratory, ground-based and aircraft experiments with innovative modelling to study the fundamental physical and chemical properties of aerosol particles and clouds. Climate, Environment, and Sustainability is one of the University of Vienna’s strategic priorities; the AEP Group’s work supports this priority and actively engages with the University’s Environment and Climate Research Hub, fostering strong interdisciplinary links and collaboration opportunities. Our current research focuses on different areas of aerosol science such as nucleation/new particle formation, microphysical and optical aerosol properties, aerosol long-range transport, cloud microphysics, nano-/microplastics, and covers the whole size spectrum from the nano- to the microscale.

Your academic profile:

  • Doctoral degree/PhD
  • Two years of international research experience during or after doctoral studies
  • Outstanding research achievements, excellent publication and funding record, international reputation
  • Gender and diversity competence
  • Experience in designing of and participating in research projects, ability to lead research groups and acquire third-party funding
  • Enthusiasm for excellent teaching and supervision at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level

We expect the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor's programmes and for participation in university committees.

We offer:

  • the opportunity to obtain a permanent position and eventual promotion to full professor; the initial contract as Assistant Professor is limited to six years, after positive evaluation of a qualification agreement the contract becomes permanent as Associate Professor; Associate Professors can be promoted to Full Professor through an internal competitive procedure.
  • a dynamic research environment
  • a wide range of research and teaching support services
  • attractive working conditions in a city with a high quality of life
  • an attractive salary according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Staff (level A2) and an organisational retirement plan
