Job description:

At the University of Vienna, almost 11,000 individuals explore the mysteries that shape our future. Among them, approximately 3,000 dedicated employees provide administrative and technical support for cutting-edge international research and teaching. With us you will discover a nurturing environment that encourages your continuous aspiration to discover and shape innovative solutions. Does this resonate with your ambitions? We are currently seeking a/an

Technician: Measurement Technology (Atmospheric Research, Part-time)

51 Faculty of Physics
Startdate: 01.10.2026 | Working hours: 20 | Collective bargaining agreement: §54 VwGr. IIIb
Limited until: 20.05.2027
Reference no.: 6039

Do you enjoy supporting researchers with technical tasks and measurements – both in the laboratory and during international (aircraft) measurement campaigns on climate and environmental topics? Do you design and 3D-print your own components for direct use in measuring instruments, work in a structured manner and enjoy travelling? Is setting up computers and resolving network issues no problem for you? If so, we look forward to getting to know you!

Your personal sphere of influence:

As a technician with a HTL Matura and relevant professional experience (ideally HTL engineer) or with equivalent qualifications - e.g. state-certified technician (D) or relevant Bachelor's degree (e.g. physics, electrical engineering, mechatronics, aerospace engineering, computer science or similar) - you will support the research work of the Aerosol Physics and Environmental Physics group.

In an international university research environment, you can expect a varied job as part of our technical team, where you will exchange expertise and complement one another.

You will be involved in the development and operation of both ground-based and aircraft-based in-situ aerosol measurement instruments, and will work on pioneering projects in atmospheric and climate research. You will regularly cooperate with leading international institutions such as the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).

The position is limited until May 2027 to the duration of an employee's absence due to parental part-time employment. lf the employee is not returning full time, the position can be extended by mutual agreement.

Your future tasks:

  • You will support the scientists of the aerosol group in the assembly, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of components, devices and measurement instruments
  • You will build and modify laboratory and calibration setups, including cutting, bending, and assembling sampling systems
  • You will design and print 3D parts for measuring instruments and calibration setups
  • You will support the ongoing operation of the laboratory (calibration, maintenance and spare parts management, stock control, ordering, and management of consumables)
  • You will support the aerosol group in IT tasks
  • You will support the installation, calibration, and operation of both aerosol measurement instruments on research aircraft (e.g., the NASA WB-57 or NCAR GV) and ground-based aerosol measurement facilities (e.g., the future ACTRIS National Facility/University of Vienna Aerosol Observatory Core Facility)
  • You will be actively involved in preparing and – if needed – conducting (aircraft) measurement campaigns, both domestically and abroad
  • You will create and maintain technical documentation, including certification documents for aircraft measurements

This is part of your personality:

Requirements

  • HTL Matura plus relevant professional experience (ideally HTL engineer) or equivalent education (e.g. state-certified technician (D) or relevant degree (Bachelor's)) with a focus on physics, electrical engineering, mechatronics, aerospace engineering, computer science or similar
  • Very good knowledge of English (C1 or higher)
  • Experience with 3D printing and CAD programs
  • Advanced computer/IT skills (troubleshooting, Windows administration etc.)
  • Reliable, regular presence in the laboratory on site in Vienna
  • Willingness to travel: Measurement campaigns may involve international stays in the US and other countries
  • Willingness and ability to participate in research flights and operate instruments onboard during the research flights
  • Class B driving licence
  • You value teamwork and contribute your expertise to complement that of your colleagues
  • You approach tasks in a structured, goal-driven way and are able to work independently

Desirable

  • Practical experience in setting up and operating technical laboratory infrastructure, particularly sampling line systems, as well as with relevant component and ordering catalogs, e.g., Swagelok
  • Knowledge of aerosol physics and experience with measurement campaigns – particularly aircraft field experiments – is an advantage
  • Interest in programming (Python, C, microcontrollers)
  • Basic knowledge of electronics is an asset
  • Knowledge of German, or willingness to acquire it, is an advantage
  • Flexibility and ability to improvise

Your particular working style: You work in a goal-oriented, self-reliant, structured and forward-looking manner. You enjoy actively shaping technical solutions and perform tasks accurately. You are a team player with strong social and communication skills.

What we offer:

Inspiring working atmosphere: You will be part of a diverse and committed team. The tasks are varied and you will get to know the work at internationally renowned organizations.
Good public transport connections: Your workplace in the center of beautiful Vienna is easily accessible by public transport.
