Postdoctoral Researcher (f_m_x) – AI-based analysis of complex systems
Reference Number 11336
Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods have the potential to significantly advance and transform Earth system sciences, particularly given the complexity of the Earth system as a dynamic system of interacting components. Traditional simulation often reaches its limits, primarily due to this complexity. We are seeking a creative thinking person who works at the intersection for AI research and physical modelling. The goal of this position is to develop data-driven approaches to AI-based analysis of complex interaction systems and suitable hybrid architectures for this purpose. This involves taking up current developments in the field of AI (e.g., Generative AI, Edge AI, Sustainable AI, Agentic AI) and translating them into concrete application scenarios.Your responsibilities:
- Conducting research in the field of method development for physics-informed/physics-aware AI
- Developing generative AI methods in interdisciplinary research projects
- Publication of research papers in relevant academic journals and at conferences
- Participation in the application process for national and international research projects
- Participation in GFZ-wide projects in the field of AI
About You:
Essential Qualifications:- A Master's degree and a PhD in Data Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or in a related field
- In-depth knowledge in current methodology of AI (Deep Learning, generative AI, Explainable AI, …) and relevant programming frameworks
- Advanced programming skills in relevant programming languages and contexts (e.g., Python, HPC/GPU programming, big data applications)
- Strong team spirit and experience in interdisciplinary collaboration
- Fluent in spoken and written English
- Knowledge of German
- Experience in scientific research in the field of physics-informed/physics-aware AI
- Experience with interdisciplinary research projects
- Solid understanding of data-driven modelling and related mathematical and statistical methods
What we offer:
- Ambitious and varied tasks in a dynamic and international research environment
- State-of-the-art equipment
- Public service benefits
- Extensive training opportunities
- Professional career advice offered by our in-house Career-Centre
- Flexible working hours and conditions
- Support with finding a good work-life balance offered by benefit@work
- Institute day-care centre on site
- Working at the Albert Einstein Science Park on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam
- Workplace within walking distance of Potsdam main train station, or just a short ride on the shuttle bus

About the employer
GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences
GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences
The GFZ is Germany’s national center for research on the solid Earth. We advance the understanding of dynamic processes to address global challenges—ranging from mitigating the impacts of natural hazards and preserving our environment in times of global change to the responsible management of natural resources. We are a member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest scientific organization. With approximately 1,200 staff and around 500 visiting researchers, we contribute to the Helmholtz research area “Earth and Environment,” combining cutting-edge research with societal relevance and international collaboration.
Our work integrates multidisciplinary studies of Earth’s systems and leverages advanced technologies and infrastructures to explore solutions and bring our knowledge into society. We do all this in line with our vision: “In tune with the Earth—to preserve it as a habitable planet.”
