Scientific researcher (f_m_x) - GNSS Neotectonic GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences
GFZ is Germany's national centre for solid Earth research. We advance the understanding of dynamic processes to address global challenges, from mitigating the impacts of natural hazards and sustaining our habitat amid global change to responsibly managing georesources. We are part of the Helmholtz Association, the largest German scientific organisation. With around 1,200 employees as well as ca. 500 guest researchers, we contribute to the Helmholtz Research Field Earth and Environment, aligning cutting-edge research with societal relevance and international collaboration. Our work integrates multidisciplinary studies across Earth's system components, leveraging advanced technologies and infrastructure to research solutions and to transfer our knowledge to society. We are doing this in line with our vision: “Taking the pulse of our Earth to safeguard a habitable planet”.
For section 1.1 Space Geodetic Techniques (department “Geodesy”), we are looking for a:
Scientific researcher (f_m_x) - GNSS Neotectonic
We, as the Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, operate interdisciplinary observatories in various countries in collaboration with partners to monitor geodynamic processes in detail. The Central European Volcanic Province Observatory focuses on intraplate volcanism in Germany (the Eifel Volcanic Field and the Vogtland). Observing an active subduction and the earthquake cycle takes place at the Integrated Plate Boundary Observatory Chile (IPOC). Further GFZ observatories and focus areas are located in Central Asia, Italy (Mount Etna), and Iceland.
As a research associate, you will process the associated GNSS data, derive time series, and interpret the observed surface deformations on short and long timescales. You will compare your results with observations from other disciplines and, drawing on your geodetic expertise, actively participate in interdisciplinary exchange within the observatories.
Your responsibilities:
- Processing, analysis, and interpretation of recent crustal movements using GNSS
- Validation of the results obtained against findings from other disciplines and observational methods
- Further development of GNSS analysis and interpretation methods
- Strengthening collaboration between geodesy and geophysics at the GFZ through participation in joint campaigns and the initiation of independent projects
- (optional) Installation, operation and maintenance of GNSS stations at the GFZ observatories as well as

- Experience in GNSS data analysis using scientific software packages
- Excellent written and spoken English skills
Desirable Qualifications:
- A PhD in geodesy or a related field
- Knowledge of geodynamic processes and investigative methods
- Willingness to collaborate in an interdisciplinary and international research environment
- Willingness to participate in fieldwork and GNSS station maintenance tasks both domestically and abroad
What we offer:
- Ambitious and varied tasks in a dynamic and international research environment
