PhD Position (f/m/x) – Rethinking Global Governance and Human Security in the 1990s

Cologne Center for Advanced Studies in International History and Law (CHL)

We are one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe and one of the most important employers in our region. Our broad range of subjects, the dynamic development of our main research areas, and our central location in Cologne make us attractive for students and researchers from around the world. We offer a wide range of career opportunities in science, technology, and administration.

The Konrad Adenauer Synergy Research Project “Rethinking Global Governance and Human Security: What lessons can we learn from the pivotal decade of the 1990s?” at the Cologne Center for Advanced Studies in International History and Law (CHL), in collaboration with Nuffield College/Oxford University, concentrates on investigating the pivotal character of the 1990s for the mobilisation of the international system; examining violent conflicts and interventions in various global crises; analysing peacekeeping and peace-enforcement operations in the context of global governance and human security; raising the question of how the 1990s give rise to the notion of “failures” and “successes” of global governance; and examining the nature and extent of the involvement of key states in global governance and human security.

Your Tasks

  • Conduct independent and original PhD research in areas of relevance to the Research Project Rethinking Global Governance and Human Security. The person appointed will, with support and under guidance of the senior researchers involved, be expected to take the lead in the design, conduct, and interpretation of research.
  • Play a supporting role in the organisation of workshops, conferences, and other events associated with the Research Project Rethinking Global Governance and Human Security.
  • Present the results of your research at Research Project events, as well as at relevant seminars, workshops, and conferences.
  • Coordinate tasks and duties with other members of the research team under supervision.

Your Profile

  • Hold an excellent master’s degree in modern history or international history.
  • Research experience or at least deepened and documented interest that fit with the broader research agenda.
  • Ability and willingness to engage with the logistics of organising workshops and conferences with a diverse range of participants from the academic and public policy world, nationally and internationally.
  • Ability to conduct high quality academic research as evidenced by an outstanding master’s thesis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (English).
  • Excellent organisational skills, flexibility and responsiveness, the ability to prioritise workload, and to meet deadlines.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills and the ability to work constructively and effectively both as part of a small research team and under own initiative.

We Offer

  • A diverse working environment with equal opportunities
  • Support in balancing work and family life
  • Extensive advanced training opportunities
  • Occupational health management offers
  • Flexible working time models
  • Opportunity to work remotely

We also expressly welcome applications from all suitable candidates regardless of their gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity.
The position is available from 01.10.2025 on a part-time basis (25,89 hours per week). The position is to be filled for a fixed term of three years with the option of a year of extension. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.
