Modeling Coordinator (m/f/d) in the Future Forests Cluster of Excellence

to support the modeling activities in the Socio-Ecological Systems Modeling Lab.

Full-time position, Start-date: 1. March 2026

The Future Forests Cluster of Excellence is an interdisciplinary research center dedicated to issues of adaptation and transformation of forests and their social use in the context of global change. Future-oriented research on the complex interactions between forests and society is generously funded here by the German federal and state governments' Excellence Initiative. Future Forests brings together more than 50 scientists from four faculties and non-university partner institutions.

Your responsibilities
You will play an important role in the Cluster of Excellence by coordinating modeling activities, developing synergies and collaborations, and helping to shape research in the field of socio-ecological modeling.

Your activities will include:

• Coordinating and designing the Socio-Ecological Systems Modeling Lab
• Developing and maintaining an overview of modeling approaches in the Cluster of Excellence; comparative model documentation, including examples of use
• Collaborating on the integration of models, their evaluation with reference data, and the quantification of uncertainties
• Leading and contributing to scientific publications
• Establishing modeling best practices, quality assurance, and standardization of modeling activities according to FAIR principles
• Advising and training researchers on the topics of (collaborative) model development and documentation, and HPC
• Organizing seminars and workshops on modeling activities in the cluster
• Maintaining close communication with researchers in the cluster and with the steering group of the Socio-Ecological Systems Modeling Lab, as well as collaborating with the IT department of the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources
• Monitoring and reporting

Your profile
We are looking for an open-minded and helpful person who is seeking a new challenge and is characterized by commitment and team spirit.

You also have:

• A successfully completed doctoral degree in environmental sciences, engineering, applied computer science, or a related field
• An understanding of socio-ecological systems and an interest in interdisciplinary research
• Publications in international journals related to modeling
• Experience supervising theses (BSc/MSc/PhD)
• A structured, independent, and service-oriented approach to work
• Very good verbal and written English skills; additional German skills are an advantage
• Commitment, the ability to work in a team and independently, as well as a high degree of trustworthiness and reliability
