Lab Coordinator BioNMR Facility & Data Science Specialist

50 Faculty of Life Sciences
Working hours: 34 | Collective bargaining agreement: §54 VwGr. IVa

Reference no.: 6249

The position is available immediately, with the option of part-time work. The position is initially limited to four years, with the option of a permanent position following an evaluation of the University of Vienna’s "Bio NMR" Core Facility in the fourth year.

Your personal sphere of influence:

The BioNMR Core Facility, led by Assoc.-Prof. Dr. Julien Orts within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is seeking a motivated BioNMR Facility & Data Science Specialist with expertise in BioNMR facility operations, user support, and data pipeline development. This is a versatile, hands-on role that combines instrument and infrastructure management with modern data science and coding — an ideal position for candidates who want to operate at the interface of analytical science and computational workflows.

The facility serves a user base of over 100 researchers and maintains strong academic and industrial collaborations. The appointed candidate will act as the operational core of the facility. All responsibilities listed in this advertisement are considered essential functions of the role. Effective performance across all areas — including user support, instrument operations, and data pipeline development — is required throughout the duration of the contract.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Troubleshooting & Maintenance

  • Provide first-level troubleshooting for instrument and software issues.
  • Liaise with vendor support and coordinate problem resolution.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and monitor instrument performance.

User Support & Training

  • Assist users for complex measurement operations.
  • Independently onboard new users through instrument usage procedures and safety protocols.

Data Pipeline Development (including metabolomics and AI)

  • Build, maintain, and execute automated data-processing pipelines using Python and/or R.
  • Implement statistics, database matching, and quality control algorithms.
  • The successful candidate is expected to independently maintain and develop these technical competencies in line with evolving facility demands.

AI & Workflow Optimization

  • Integrate machine learning tools for automated spectral processing tasks (e.g., peak picking, artifact removal).
  • Identify and implement workflow improvements to increase throughput and reproducibility.

IT Coordination & Data Management

  • Oversee facility IT infrastructure for data acquisition, storage, and software.
  • Coordinate system updates, backups, data export, archiving, and quality checks.

Safety Compliance

  • Ensure user safety during NMR operations, including magnet safety training and cryogen handling oversight.
  • Maintain facility safety standards, restricted access controls, emergency procedures, and safety documentation.

Collaborative Research

  • Engage in collaborative research projects with groups at the University of Vienna and (commercial) external partners, where capacity permits, extending beyond core service operations.

This is part of your personality:

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Holds a Master's or Ph.D. degree in biophysics, physical chemistry, bioinformatics, data science, chemistry, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Has hands-on experience with NMR spectroscopy, data processing pipelines, and programming (Python and/or R).
  • Demonstrates a strong interest in analytical workflows, chemometrics, and/or AI applications in the life sciences.
  • Is highly motivated, service-oriented, and an effective team collaborator.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills suited to supporting a large and diverse user base.

What we offer:

  • Competitive salary: Base salary according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for General University Staff (§ 54 VwGr. IVa – € 3.450,3 on a full-time basis), increasing with credited professional experience.
  • Employment Extent: 34 h/week, up to 40 hours/week
  • Stimulating research environment: From advanced BioNMR facility management to metabolomics and AI-driven data analysis, with the possibility to participate in research projects led by the Orts group.
  • Professional development: Access to a wide range of free internal training courses.
  • Location: Walking distance from Vienna’s historic city centre, with excellent public transport connections.
  • Family support: University childcare facilities through the Kinderbüro (from 6 months of age).
  • Inclusive workplace: The University of Vienna is committed to equal opportunities, diversity, and the advancement of underrepresented groups.

It’s that easy to apply:
