The Institute for Pre- and Protohistory and Near Eastern Archaeology in the Centre for Ancient Studies (ZAW) at Heidelberg University invites applications for a
Full Professorship (W3) for “Pre- and Protohistory” (f/m/d)
to be filled as of October 1, 2026.The future holder of the position is expected to cover the field as broadly as possible. Preferably, her or his research focus will continue the long-standing research focus of the Heidelberg Institute in Early Aegean Archaeology (especially Neolithic, Copper Age and Bronze Age) and its regional and supra-regional connections. A broad, theoretically informed cultural-scientific perspective is explicitly expected, which can set accents in research as well as in teaching, as well as the willingness to participate in existing interdisciplinary institutions and to contribute to the establishment of new collaborative projects and collaborative teaching programs. Track records in the areas of human-environmental relations, cultural heritage and/or geoarchaeology are advantageous. Her or his tasks include teaching lectures and seminars as well as taking exams in existing B.A. and M.A. degree programs. Furthermore, the holder of the position is expected to have experience in the realization of field research, and is expected to design and implement such research projects in the future.
Prerequisites for employment are (in accordance with article 47, paragraph 1 of the Higher Education Law of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg) a university degree, an excellent Ph.D. and pedagogical aptitude, which is usually demonstrated through teaching experience. A “habilitation” or, alternatively, a positively evaluated junior professorship or equivalent qualifications are additional requirements (in accordance with article 47, paragraph 2 of the Higher Education Law of the state of Baden-Württemberg).
