Full Professor of Chemical Engineering (W3)
at salary grade W3 to commence as soon as possible. This is a permanent civil service position.
The successful candidate is expected to represent the field designated by the professorship in its full breadth, both in research and in teaching, and to have an outstanding record of relevant engineering research in areas of future importance.
In research, a clearly defined focus on climate-relevant technologies in chemical engineering is expected. The research should contribute to the transformation and decarbonisation of the chemical industry and energy technology toward a climate-neutral and resource-efficient materials economy. The focus is on catalytic processes for utilising renewable and CO₂-based carbon sources, as well as for designing closed-loop material cycles in industrial chemistry and the energy sector. Of particular interest are processes for converting carbon-containing material streams from various sources, such as biogenic sources, plastic waste, or previously unused CO₂- or CO-containing process gases. Contributions to the integration of renewable energies into chemical conversion processes, for example in the context of Power-to-X concepts, are expressly encouraged, particularly to produce advanced renewable fuels. The research field of electrochemical processes (electrolysis, fuel cells, batteries) will not be a research focus of the advertised professorship.
The research should be based on both theoretical and experimental work. The research areas should address both fundamental and applied questions related to the development and optimisation of chemical engineering processes. Emphasis is placed on issues in reaction engineering and the design of industrial and industry-related chemical reactors, e.g., for multiphase reactions. This also includes the modeling and simulation of complex homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic reaction systems based on the interaction of chemical reactions with heat and mass transfer processes. Data-driven methods should be used to complement the analysis and optimisation of such systems, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches for evaluating experimental and process-related data.
The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in both research and teaching and have a strong profile in the field of chemical engineering. The candidate must be able to demonstrate this through several years of verifiable, relevant, and outstanding prior work in industry and/or research, as well as teaching experience or continuing professional development in teaching. The successful candidate must be able to teach courses in both German and English. The successful acquisition of third-party funding, including contract research, is required, as is active participation and the assumption of leadership responsibilities within the Centre for Energy Technology (ZET). Compatibility with and the ability to contribute to Collaborative Research Centre initiatives in the field of modern energy and process engineering are required.
