Dusiburg / Essen

We are a young, innovative university in the middle of the Ruhr Metropolis. Excellent in research and teaching, we think in terms of possibilities instead of limits and develop ideas with a future. We embrace diversity, promote potential and are committed to educational justice worthy of the name.
Doctoral Candidate/Postdoc/Researcher (f/m/d)
Date of occupation: ss soon as possible
Contract duration: 36 months
Working time: 100 percent of a full-time position (part-time employment possible)
Application deadline: 28 September 2025
The Institute of NST focuses on the production and application of nanoscale solids and their model-based description. To this end, flow diagram simulations are used, i.e. computer-aided methods for modelling, analysing and optimising process engineering processes, such as those found in the chemical industry, food technology or environmental technology. In an earlier research project, ‘Networked multivariate population balances using Monte Carlo methods’, program systems and dynamic models were developed that can be used for dynamic flow chart simulation. The stochastic methods developed are particularly useful for describing multivariate dispersed properties, such as the size and shape of particles. In a next step, the methods will be merged with an open-source flow diagram modelling system.

Your tasks
- You will develop a C++-based stochastic flow diagram simulation for solid process engineering. The software will be compatible with an open-source flow diagram modelling system (Dyssol).
- You will work on accelerating numerical simulations using graphics processing units (GPUs) and deploying them on the ‘amplitUDE’ supercomputer, which is equipped with high-end GPUs (NVIDIA H100).
- You will present the results in the form of well-documented software and scientific publications.
- You will assist in the preparation and implementation of courses as well as in administrative tasks.
Your profile
- Completed university degree of at least 8 semesters of standard study time (optionally with a doctorate) in mechanical engineering/process engineering, engineering mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, nanoengineering or physics
- Experience in software development for numerical simulations
- Experience with GPU programming or mainframe computers is an advantage, but not a prerequisite
- Enjoyment of and willingness to engage in interdisciplinary work is a prerequisite
We offer
- A varied and diverse range of tasks
- Opportunities for further scientific qualification within the scope of the position.
- Family-friendly environment with childcare options
- Advice on family care responsibilities
- A wide range of training and further education opportunities, individual training
- Excellent public transport connections and free parking
- Attractive sports and health options (university sports)
- The option of working from home
