Associate or Full Professor of Smart Imaging and Data Profiling Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)
The Faculty of Medicine at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for an
Associate or Full Professor of Smart Imaging and Data Profiling
at the Institute of Radiology to be filled by the earliest possible starting date with the following possibilities: A tenure-track position as an associate professor at pay grade W2 leading to a full professorship at pay grade W3, or a permanent position as a full professor at pay grade W3. The position as an associate professor will be filled for an initial period of six years. FAU offers the long-term perspective of a permanent appointment to a full professorship if the requirements of the tenure evaluation are met. The decision whether to appoint the professor to a tenure-track associate professorship leading to a full professorship or to a full professorship from the outset depends on the candidate’s qualifications.
The professor will be appointed within the framework of the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria in the collaborative project d.DiM: Digital Disease Management. They will be expected to share ideas with researchers based at other locations in the AI health hub and to initiate joint activities or research projects. It is intended that the professor will also be granted secondary membership of the Faculty of Engineering.
We seek to appoint an internationally recognized leader in the area of AI-based MR imaging approaches (clinical radiological or computer-based imaging research in conjunction with clinical experience) with a research focus on one or more of the following areas:
- Developing methods for the modality-specific AI-based optimization of scan processes and examination workflows
- Intelligent algorithms for data extraction and analysis in the context of scans
- Personalized support for clinical decisions
Furthermore, the professorship’s research profile should tie in with the key research priorities at the Faculty of Medicine. We expect active collaboration in the relevant research networks (collaborative research centers, DFG research groups, research training groups, Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research, Deutsches Zentrum für Immuntherapie, NCT WERA) and priority programs at the faculties and Uniklinikum Erlangen. Please note that teaching in the degree programs in Medicine and Dentistry is predominantly in German. The professor will also be expected to become involved in patient care to a certain extent.
The successful candidate will have an outstanding track record in research and teaching. They are required to have a university degree and a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline and additional postdoctoral qualifications (either a habilitation or equivalent academic qualifications). These qualifications may also have been achieved in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (for example as assistant professor). A license to practice medicine in the field of radiology would be advantageous.
For appointment to a tenure-track position as an associate professor leading to a full professorship, candidates are also expected to have a broad research profile, international visibility, a sustained record of international publications, and considerable experience in teaching.
For appointment to a permanent full professorship, candidates are also expected to have a broad research profile, high international visibility, a sustained record of international publications at a very high level, extensive experience in teaching, and leadership and management skills.
The successful candidate is expected to carry out administrative duties and take a proactive approach to raising third-party funding. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are preferred.
In its pursuit of academic excellence, FAU is committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture, and values diversity. FAU is a family-friendly employer and responsive to the needs of dual career couples.
Please submit your complete application (CV, list of publications, teaching and research concept, and a gender and diversity concept [max. 2 pages each], list of third-party funding, copies of certificates and degrees) online at https://berufungen.fau.de by September 15, 2026, addressed to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Please contact med-berufungen@fau.de with any questions.
