W2-Professorship of Landscape Planning, Biodiversity Management and Restoration Ecology

Your Responsibilities
You will teach in the Bachelor-s and Master-s degree programmes at the Detmold School of Design, within the Landscape Architecture teaching unit, as well as in related degree programmes.
Your teaching will focus on the planning-relevant ecological foundations required to fulfil the statutory tasks of landscape planning and environmental and nature conservation, as well as on informal planning strategies.
You will impart knowledge of landscape ecology, particularly vegetation, animal and population ecology, including comprehensive knowledge of species, as well as the fundamentals of incorporating all other environmental resources and protected assets into planning processes.
You will teach students planning strategies for habitat and biotope development, taking into account abiotic site conditions, ecological connectivity and the enhancement and restoration of degraded ecosystems in both rural and urban contexts.
To this end, you will apply, among other approaches, innovative methods of restoration ecology and biodiversity monitoring.
You have a strong desire to be on campus and present for your students. Up to 25 % of your teaching can be provided as digital teaching, if required, to enable cross-location lectures.
You are prepared to conduct courses in German as well as in English.
You will promote interdisciplinary study formats, e.g., through practical student projects.
You will conduct research at the interface between fundamental ecological research and applied landscape planning.
Your research questions and topics address current ecological and societal challenges, such as the biodiversity and climate crises, species decline and competing demands for land, as well as current political and legal developments, such as the EU Nature Restoration Regulation.
You have strong interest in innovative communication formats which encourage the dialog between science and society.
You will shape your work closely with the professorship for Landscape Planning, Landscape Ecology and Nature Conservation, as well as the professorship for Landscape Planning and Recreation Planning, and jointly with these fields you will communicate and advance the scope and role of landscape planning both within and beyond the university.
You will actively contribute to the development of the “BlueGreenLab- research and knowledge transfer institute.
You will contribute to the university-s internal committee work in a collegial manner and participate actively in expanding cooperation relationships with domestic and foreign universities and with practice partners.
Your Profile
You have
- the ability to represent the field comprehensively and in appropriate depth in both research and teaching
- the ability to teach in German and English
In addition, you fulfil the requirements of § 36 Hochschulgesetz NRW and have:
- a completed qualified university degree
- a successfully completed doctorate degree in a relevant field of knowledge (e. g. landscape architecture, landscape/environmental planning, ecology, biology) or in related disciplines
- relevant professional experience (at least five years, at least three of which gained outside the university sector)
- as an exception to the required professional experience outside of the university sector, provided relevant additional scientific achievements after obtaining the doctorate
Furthermore, you should also have
- demonstrated scientific expertise in the fields of biodiversity research and restoration ecology in the context of applied landscape planning, evidenced by publications and successfully acquired third-party funded research projects
- sound experience in the application and development of monitoring methods, including fieldwork, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and artificial intelligence (AI)
- relevant teaching experience, particularly in innovative, interdisciplinary, and practice-oriented teaching formats, as well as the ability to design and supervise practice-based student projects
- remonstrated experience in securing and managing externally funded research projects, as well as in transferring research findings into applied planning standards, guidelines, or policy advice
- the ability to build and maintain networks with external partners, including public authorities, NGOs, planning consultancies, as well as universities and other institutions in the region
