Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – The University in the Helmholtz Association

In close partnership with society, KIT develops solutions for urgent challenges – from climate change, energy transition and sustainable use of natural resources to artificial intelligence, sovereignty and an aging population. As The University in the Helmholtz Association, KIT unites scientific excellence from insight to application-driven research under one roof – and is thus in a unique position to drive this transformation. As a University of Excellence, KIT offers its more than 10,000 employees and 22,800 students outstanding opportunities to shape a sustainable and resilient future.
KIT – Science for Impact.

Mathematical Statistics provides the foundation for the rigorous description, analysis, and interpretation of random and complex data and processes. The field plays a key role in the development of mathematical methods for data science and contributes substantially to addressing contemporary challenges in data analysis. Owing to wide-ranging applications in the natural sciences, engineering, and economics, as well as strong connections to other areas of mathematics, the discipline is of central strategic and interdisciplinary relevance in both research and teaching.

Your Tasks

  • You are developing an innovative research program in mathematical statistics that complements KIT's existing research priorities and provides new impetus, preferably in the areas of statistical methods for high-dimensional and/or large-scale data, mathematical and statistical foundations of machine learning, statistics of stochastic processes and dependent data, or statistics of complex networks.
  • You make substantial contributions to the research focus Stochastic Models of the KIT Department of Mathematics and build bridges between mathematical theory and applications, for instance by contributing to the KIT-center MathSEE.
  • You actively contribute to the teaching of stochastic contents in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Mathematics, with particular responsibility for Mathematical Statistics and teaching activities in the area of probability theory and statistics for other departments.
  • You represent the Institute of Stochastics as a member of the collegial institute board and take on responsibilities in academic self-governance.

Your Profile

  • You have an internationally distinguished research profile in Mathematical Statistics, documented by a substantial record of publications in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals and further academic achievements (Habilitation or equivalent qualification).
  • You have a proven record in applications for competitive third-party funding and are willing to assume a leading role in future collaborative research consortia.
  • You have sound experience in university-level teaching as well as in supervising students and early-career researchers. Prospectively, the position includes teaching in German within the Bachelor's program.
  • You can demonstrate successful experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and research projects.
