Your personal sphere of influence:

As a University Assistant (Predoctoral), you will complement the research team surrounding Univ.-Prof. Dr. Stefan Büttner.

The Department of Classical Philology, Middle and Neo-Latin Studies is responsible for researching and teaching the language and literature of Greek and Roman antiquity (including Late Antiquity), as well as the Late, Medieval, and Neo-Latin languages and Latin literature of post-antique eras up to the present day—a period spanning approximately 2,700 years. At the core of its mission is training in the Greek and Latin languages and the textual interpretation of European antiquity's literary works, which have had—and continue to have—a decisive influence on global culture. Student education takes place within the framework of the curriculum for Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, teacher accreditation programs (Latin and/or Greek), and Doctoral studies in Greek and/or Latin.

Your future tasks:

You will actively participate in research, teaching, and administration, which entails:

  • Ancient Greek Studies (Gräzistik)

  • Participation in research projects

  • Publication and presentation activities

  • Student advising and support

  • Participation in the organization of conferences and symposia

  • Participation in departmental administration

  • Co-teaching and independent teaching of courses to the extent permitted by collective bargaining agreements

  • Examination activities

  • The conclusion of a doctoral agreement within 12 months is expected.

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed university degree (Diploma, Master's, or Magister) in the field of Classical Philology / Ancient Greek Studies
  • Excellent knowledge of the Ancient Greek language and very good knowledge of the Latin language
  • Education in the literature and culture of antiquity, with a focus on Ancient Greek Studies
  • High level of written and oral communication skills in the German language
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Resilience / ability to work under pressure
  • Knowledge of university processes and structures
  • IT user skills
  • Initial experience in academic work
  • Ideally, you have also already gained some initial teaching experience (e.g., in tutorials)

    You bring the following language skills:

  • Ancient Greek (excellent skills)

  • Latin (very good skills)

  • German (excellent skills)

  • English (very good skills)

  • Italian (good skills)

The contract duration upon employment is 4 years. Initially fixed for 1.5 years, the employment relationship will be automatically extended to 4 years unless the employer issues a notice of non-extension within the first 12 months.
