The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is looking to appoint an outstanding individual to a

Tenured Professorship in ”Animal Physiology”
(W2 salary)

within the Faculty of Natural Sciences 1 - Biosciences, Institute of Biology. The position will commence preferably by April 1st, 2027.

MLU’s long-term strategy is to strengthen its profile areas of ‘Knowledge, Culture and Education’, ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Transformation’. In line with these aspirations, the future holder of the Chair of Animal Physiology should primarily strengthen the profile area of ‘Sustainability’ and support the faculty’s research priorities (biodiversity and RNA/protein research) through interdisciplinary research activities. Ideally, the applicant’s current and future research areas should cover at least one of these priority areas. The Zoology cluster of chairs at the Institute of Biology focuses on evolutionary ecology and biodiversity, using mainly insect models. The research focus of the new professorship should be compatible with the current research areas within the Zoology cluster and preferably encompass work on invertebrates. Examples of possible research areas could include adaptations to changing environments and their functional investigation (including at the cellular and/or molecular levels).

We seek internationally recognised scientists with innovative research concepts who are cooperative and team-oriented colleagues prepared to work in a dynamic and progressive academic environment. Experience in leading an independent scientific research group is expected. Early-career group leaders, whose scientific excellence can be demonstrated through publications and acquisition of competitive third-party funding, are encouraged to apply.

We place great emphasis on the pedagogical skills of applicants, as teaching duties include communicating the basics of animal physiology to undergraduates at the Bachelor level, and to teacher-training students, as well as lecturing on advanced topics at the Master level. The latter will also involve contributing to the international Master programmes. Undergraduate teaching is normally conducted in German and command of the German language sufficient to conduct classroom teaching is expected within three years. Applicants should submit a teaching concept, including an outline of the pedagogical approaches and specific ideas for the modules to be taught.

Applicants need to fulfill the pre-conditions of appointment as stipulated in section 35 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities. Particular emphasis is placed on a Habilitation in the relevant field, or an equivalent level of scientific achievement and recognition. Candidates are expected to have attained the appropriate level of experience or qualification in teaching. A willingness to contribute actively to the administrative duties associated with the university’s self-governance is also expected. Further duties and responsibilities are stipulated in section 34 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities.

The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is committed to diversity and aims to create an inclusive environment where our staff and students feel valued and inspired. In particular, we aim to increase the proportion of women appointed as permanent staff; therefore, qualified female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.

The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg strives to provide an environment compatible with work-life-balance and has been certified as a family-friendly university since 2009.

Applications from candidates with disabilities are particularly welcome, and will be given preference in the event of equivalent qualification.

Applications in a digital format should include a complete curriculum vitae, copies of qualifications, a brief description of the candidate’s scientific background, a list of publications and successful third-party funding acquisition, and a description of previous teaching experience/teaching concept. Please include a private contact address and send applications via the Martin-Luther University’s ‘Berufungsportal’ at:

https://berufungsportal.uni-halle.de

Contact person for queries pertinent to the position is Prof. Dr. Claudia Fricke, Tel.: 0345 55 26305, E-Mail: Claudia.Fricke@zoologie.uni-halle.de
