Research Scientist (f_m_x) / Geophysicist/Physicist (f_m_x) for Electromagnetic Exploration
Reference Number 11161
The joint project ConvEx aims to develop integrated exploration methods for the spatial mapping of hydrothermal convection in deep geothermal development. In the sub-project ‘Electromagnetic Exploration for Geothermal Exploration Fields’, exploration campaigns are being carried out using controlled-source electromagnetics (CSEM) and magnetotellurics (MT) methods to detect electrical conductivity contrasts at reservoir depth. As part of the joint project, the results of the EM methods will be combined with other geophysical and petrophysical data. In addition, coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical numerical simulations will be carried out. We are looking for a scientist for electromagnetic exploration. Your responsibilities:- Planning and execution of magnetotelluric and controlled source EM measurements
- Participation in field measurements lasting several weeks
- Processing and archiving of the data obtained
- Numerical modelling and inversion of magnetotelluric and controlled source EM data
- Interpretation of the modelling results in a geoscientific context
- New and further development of numerical methods in EM
- Presentation and publication of results, participation in project meetings
- MSc in Physics, Mathematics or Geosciences, ideally with a focus on Geophysics, a PhD is desirable
- Proven practical and theoretical experience of several years with electromagnetic methods in Geophysics
- Proven in-depth experience in programming numerical applications (e.g. with C++, Matlab, Python, Fortran) and using high-performance computers (HPC clusters)
- Ability and willingness to participate in geophysical field measurements lasting several weeks
- Experience in managing, planning and conducting geophysical field measurements, ideally in the field of Electromagnetics
- Very good written and spoken German and English
- Valid Class B (or higher) driving licence, including driving experience
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and very good communication skills are expected

About the employer
GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences
GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences
The GFZ is Germany’s national center for research on the solid Earth. We advance the understanding of dynamic processes to address global challenges—ranging from mitigating the impacts of natural hazards and preserving our environment in times of global change to the responsible management of natural resources. We are a member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest scientific organization. With approximately 1,200 staff and around 500 visiting researchers, we contribute to the Helmholtz research area “Earth and Environment,” combining cutting-edge research with societal relevance and international collaboration.
Our work integrates multidisciplinary studies of Earth’s systems and leverages advanced technologies and infrastructures to explore solutions and bring our knowledge into society. We do all this in line with our vision: “In tune with the Earth—to preserve it as a habitable planet.”
