The professorship will focus on conceptual planning and evaluation, operational preparation and operations, as well as infrastructure design for public transportation systems.
In terms of teaching, the professorship should cover the fundamentals of public transport systems and rail transport, planning, design and operation of public transport system facilities, evaluation and financing of public transport systems and safety of transport systems. The teaching modules will be offered in the faculty's German-language degree programs (Civil Engineering, Real Estate Engineering and Management, Environmental Engineering, Transport Engineering) and in the English-language master's program in Infrastructure Planning. The successful candidate is also expected to take on responsibilities related to academic self-governance.
In terms of research, the professorship is expected to cover several of the areas listed below:
- Integrated planning, organization, and operation of public transport systems;
- Design, construction, maintenance, and operation of railways;
- Performance characteristics of public transportation systems;
- Evaluation methods in transport economics;
- Design of safety of transport systems;
- Automation of operations;
- Freight transport, in particular by rail.
The professorship involves heading the Institute of Railway and Transportation Engineering or the collegial leadership of a new Institute for Transport Science (working title).
We are searching for an individual who is distinguished by high-ranking scientific publications with international visibility and who has practical engineering experience in the planning and/or operation of public transport systems and in rail transport. The University of Stuttgart places particular emphasis on high-quality teaching, student support, and a corresponding level of commitment from teaching staff. Evidence of, or discernible potential for, outstanding teaching performance and active participation in the further development of the university-s existing courses are therefore expected. Experience with innovative teaching concepts as well as research-based teaching and learning is an asset. A willingness to pursue continuing education in university teaching is required.

Possible successes may include, for example, those in the fields of research, teaching, science and society, knowledge and technology transfer, inventions and patents, software development or spin-offs.
