Professorship (Open Rank: W2 or W1 TenureTrack to W2) in the Synthesis and Application of Quantum Materials
to be filled by 1 December 2026.
At mar.quest, physicists and chemists work together to investigate the fundamentals and applications of quantum materials and sustainable technologies in both experiment and theory. These topics are among the profile-defining research priorities of the University of Marburg. Our research focuses on the ultrafast dynamics and optoelectronics of quantum materials, the chemical synthesis of novel molecules, understanding reactions on surfaces, and the fabrication and quantitative structural characterization of novel, technologically promising materials.
We are seeking a scientist who, by establishing an independent research group with a focus on the growth of quantum materials via metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy and the application of quantum materials in devices, will strengthen the research priorities of the Departments of Physics and Chemistry and actively contribute to the collaborative research initiatives of the Departments of Physics and Chemistry, as well as to those of mar.quest and the University of Marburg.
Tasks:
Your research focuses on the growth and device applications of novel semiconductor materials, for example, on two-dimensional materials (e.g., TMDs or other emerging 2D materials, 2D magnets) or other innovative semiconductor heterostructures for sustainable technologies. In your work, you employ and further develop metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) or atomic layer deposition (ALD). You have a strong interest in the device applications of your structures and in their characterization. Your research activities are expected to strengthen collaborations between theoretical and experimental research groups within mar.quest and to create new points of connection with the degree programs in the Departments of Physics and Chemistry.
Profile:
We expect a candidate who has demonstrated independent research achievements and whose work can be well integrated into mar.quest. Your application should include a compelling research and collaboration concept that clearly shows how your profile fits our center, as well as a teaching statement that explains how you intend to incorporate your research into the study programs.
A completed academic degree in physics or a related field, an outstanding doctoral degree, and demonstrated pedagogical aptitude are required. For the Tenure-Track Professorship, experience in the successful acquisition of research funding will be considered an asset. For the W2 professorship, demonstrated success in this area is expected.
The Tenure-Track Professorship is explicitly aimed at researchers in the early stages of their scientific careers. The total duration of employment in research and science after completion of the doctoral degree should not exceed four years. In addition, applicants generally should not have received their doctorate at the University of Marburg. However, applications by candidates who have received the doctoral degree at the University of Marburg can be considered if the applicant has worked in research and science outside of the University of Marburg for at least two years thereafter (in accordance with Section 70 (3) of the Hessian Higher Education Act (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz – HessHG). We are seeking a highly qualified, internationally visible scientist with initial outstanding scientific achievements and an independent scientific profile that demonstrates the potential for a further successful career in science at the highest international level.
For the W2 professorship, an independent research and teaching profile, high-ranking peer-reviewed publications, independently acquired and managed competitive research projects, as well as international visibility are expected. Experience in the successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding is expected.
The employment requirements of Sections 67 and 68 HessHG apply; for the Tenure-Track professorship, Section 70 HessHG also applies. The Tenure-Track professorship would initially be a grade W1 fixed term (6-year) position. If the requirements of the general German civil service law are met, the applicant will be granted temporary civil-service status for a period of six years. In the event of subsequent positive evaluation of their professional, didactic, and personal aptitude, the tenure candidate will be granted civil-service status for life, combined with the assignment of a W2 permanent professorship.
