About us
The Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences (IBU) has an interdisciplinary focus and conducts basic and applied research in biology and environmental sciences. The institute's guiding principle is "from genes and senses to ecosystems", which formulates the goal of understanding the relationships between molecular processes, characteristics and functions of organisms and the natural environment. The Professorship of Functional Plant Biology plays an important role in this context, as it aims to strengthen our understanding of plants in their habitat, from genetic variation to the function of the organism in the ecosystem. Your responsibilities

• The focus of your new position is to establish and lead the working group "Functional Plant Biology".
• You will establish an independent research area within plant biology, supported by third-party funding, using field-based as well as physiological and molecular biological laboratory-based methods.
• You will actively participate in collaborative or joint projects such as follow-up projects to the DFG research groups "DynaCom" and "DynaDeep" in the context of salt marshes and/or new joint research initiatives. We would like you to take advantage of the opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with other institutes/​departments at the university.
• You will support and promote the academic career development of students and staff.
• In teaching, you will represent plant biology in its entirety, from anatomy to genetics, in the undergraduate modules of the Bachelor's programmes in Environmental Sciences and Biology, as well as in the Master's programmes in Landscape Ecology and Biology. Participation in the Graduate School of Environmental Sciences and Biodiversity is desirable.
• You will offer courses in German and English.
• Since the Universities of Bremen and Oldenburg are linked by a cooperation agreement, active participation in the cooperation is expected.
• You will participate in academic self-administration.
• You promote a diverse and equitable university culture.

Your profile
Requirements:

• You meet the employment requirements specified in section 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG).
• You have a doctorate and habilitation or habilitation-equivalent achievements in a biological subject with a focus on plant biology.
• Your expertise covers plant biology with a focus on the functional adaptation of plants. Possible research areas that are compatible with the profile of the faculty and institute include, for example, the adaptation of plants to climate change, salt or drought stress, functional interactions of plants with their microbiome, or the analysis of quantitative traits. Research aimed at understanding plants in their natural environment would be particularly desirable, but may also focus on crops and ornamental plants in human-made habitats.
• You will demonstrate your research achievements in particular through contributions to international peer-reviewed journals.
• You have several years of experience in successfully competing for and managing third-party-funded projects.
• You have several years of independent experience in university teaching in the field of plant biology.
• You have leadership and management experience.
• You have a cooperative working style that promotes a diverse and equal opportunity working environment.
• You have experience in mentoring and promoting academic career development.
• You describe your ability to contribute to the above-mentioned areas of focus in research and teaching in a concept paper of no more than three pages.
• You have very good German and English language skills. If you do not have these skills, you are willing to acquire sufficient language skills within two years of appointment.
