Full professorship (W3) in “English Philology: Literary Studies (from Renaissance to present)” (f/m/d)
starting April 1, 2028.
The English Department at Heidelberg University, located in the heart of Heidelberg-s Old Town, offers an attractive environment for research and teaching. As the largest department in terms of student numbers in the Faculty of Modern Languages, Heidelberg-s English Department -with its five professorships and numerous research assistants- covers a broad spectrum of literary, cultural, and linguistic approaches and is known for its excellent, internationally recognized research program. We are seeking a dedicated, academically outstanding researcher with strong teamwork skills to fill the Chair of English literature and strengthen the English Department.
Your responsibilities:
In terms of research, the professorship-s profile encompasses English literature from the Renaissance to the present, with a particular focus on the literature of the eighteenth through twenty-first centuries and at least two period- or genre-specific areas of dedicated expertise.
In addition, candidates must demonstrate proven experience in at least two of the following research areas: literary and cultural theory, media and book history, media and film, narratology, postcolonial studies, gender and sexuality, digital humanities.
In terms of teaching, the chair covers the full scope of English literature. In particular, it will cover literary studies from the 18th to the 21st century, including literary history. The professorship contributes to the curriculum of the BA in English Studies, MA in English Studies, and MEd in English programs. An interest in and capability to contribute to the interdisciplinary MA in Popular Cultures program and the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Gender & Queer Studies are desirable.
Your qualifications:
The appointment requires a university degree, a qualified doctorate, pedagogical aptitude which is usually proven by teaching experience and (in accordance with Article 47, paragraph 2 of the Higher Education Law of the state of Baden-Württemberg) a Habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship or equivalent qualifications.
Candidates are expected to have a comprehensive and visible research profile, demonstrated through international publications, conference organization, or research projects. Candidates are also expected to have proven experience in university teaching, proven experience and a willingness to participate in academic self-governance, as well as a proven track record in securing external funding.
