“Solid State Quantum Systems”
(Code. No. T256-2026)

starting as soon as possible.
ABOUT TU DARMSTADT
TU Darmstadt stands for excellent and relevant science. We are playing a decisive role in shaping far-reaching processes of global change – from energy transition to artificial intelligence – through outstanding scientific knowledge and innovative academic programmes. We group our cutting-edge research into three fields: Energy and Environment, Information and Intelligence, Matter and Materials.
TU Darmstadt has strong ties to the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main metropolitan region and is well known for its cosmopolitanism and international outlook. As one of the three Rhine-Main Universities (RMU), TU Darmstadt cooperates closely with Goethe University Frankfurt and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. This includes academic research, study and teaching, the promotion of early-career researchers, and the transfer of knowledge and technology to the economy and society. TU Darmstadt actively promotes diversity and equality. We consider diversity to be the key to creative solutions and social progress.
As an institution, we place great importance on a dialogue-oriented and appreciative leadership culture, characterized by a strong capacity for innovation, the development of our employees, and a spirit of trust and cooperation.
ABOUT OUR DEPARTMENT
The Department of Physics is characterised primarily by its three research areas: Quantum Optics & Technology, Condensed Matter Physics, and Nuclear Physics & Nuclear Astrophysics. These areas are reflected in the department’s organisational structure, which is divided into three institutes. The department’s research activities benefit from synergy effects resulting from its integration into the engineering science environment of TU Darmstadt and its proximity to the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. The GSI is set to become one of the world’s largest accelerator facilities with the construction of the FAIR accelerator in the coming years.
The department’s research activities combine the breadth of subject matter necessary for educating students with a location-dependent focus that ensures international visibility and attractiveness.
YOUR TASKS
We are recruiting a University Professor (W2) for Solid State Quantum Systems to strengthen ongoing research at the Institute of Condensed Matter Physics in the field of hybrid quantum systems, starting as soon as possible.
As a university professor at TU Darmstadt, you and your research group will conduct innovative research in a new specialised field, strengthening current research in hybrid quantum systems. As part of this, you will develop an internationally visible research programme that will raise the profile of our department and make a lasting contribution to the field.
In addition, your working group contributes to cooperative research programmes with the existing groups in the Institute of Condensed Matter Physics and establishes a thematic link to the activities in the groups of the Institute of Applied Physics. The scientific focus of the position includes optical, electronic and spin excitations and their applications in new materials such as 2D materials, hybrid material systems, magnetic materials, quantum dots and optically active defects such as NV-centres, heterostructures and interfaces, as well as the use of modern spectroscopy and microscopy techniques.
Alongside excellent research, we expect innovative and engaging teaching in experimental physics. You will contribute at a high level to teaching at Bachelor’s level across the full breadth of the curriculum. You will also support our German- and English-language Master’s programmes by developing modern, research-oriented teaching formats for Master’s lectures and seminars in the field of solid-state quantum systems.
As head of your group, you will enable your team members to achieve the best possible personal development. This will allow them to perform at their best as part of a diverse team, leading to outstanding research results. You are responsible for leading and supporting your employees in accordance with our leadership guidelines.
YOUR PROFILE
You are expected to have a doctorate of high academic quality and a habilitation or equivalent in experimental physics. Previous research should demonstrate international visibility through innovative publications, science communications and projects fostering knowledge transfer. We also expect the pedagogical and leadership skills of the candidate to meet current scientific standards, and for you to be willing to undergo further training.
You should be willing to actively acquire third-party funding and lead a diverse working group, and demonstrate a high level of commitment to international networking, for example through cooperation and participation in European research initiatives.
TU Darmstadt is part of the Rhine-Main University Alliance (RMU), offering a dynamic research environment with opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation outside of physics, particularly with groups and institutions in materials science, electrical engineering, and chemistry. A willingness to collaborate is essential.
The prerequisites for employment are in accordance with the Sections 67 and 68 of the Hessisches Hochschulgesetz (Hessian Higher Education Act).
Being part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region, Technical University of Darmstadt and its surroundings are characterized by living internationality. The core element of this is a cosmopolitan climate with functional multilingualism at our university. Therefore, very good English and, at the latest after three years, good German language skills are expected.
This job advertisement is open to people of all genders. TU Darmstadt aims to further increase the number of female professors, and we therefore strongly encourage interested female researchers to apply!
