We are a young, innovative university located in the heart of the Ruhr metropolis. We pride ourselves on outstanding research and teaching, think in terms of opportunities rather than limitations and develop ideas with a view to the future. Diversity is an integral part of our culture as we promote potential and are committed to upholding genuine equity in education.

The following position is to be filled from 1st March 2028 within the Department of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen:

Full Professorship for “Urban Water Management and Resource Management”

(W3 salary band as defined in the North-Rhine-Westphalian regulations for the W salary range, Landesbesoldungsordnung W)
We are looking for an engineer in the field of urban water management and resource management or a researcher in the natural sciences with a strong research focus in engineering.

The W3 professorship in ‘Urban Water Management and Resource Management’ is based in the Civil Engineering Department within the Faculty of Engineering. It forms a strategic interface between engineering subjects and the interdisciplinary, interfaculty fields in Water Research, a strategic research area at the University of Duisburg-Essen. These activities are pooled in the University of Duisburg-Essen’s Centre for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU).
Research and development with high visibility in the field of urban water management are required and should be documented with suitable publications, projects and acquisitions of third-party funding. The successful candidate is expected to have expertise in urban water management with a focus on wastewater treatment plants as well as mixed and rainwater treatment facilities. Outstanding didactic aptitude is also required.

Close collaboration with the research activities of the Civil Engineering Department in the context of the University of Duisburg-Essen’s strategic research areas is desirable. Active participation in and further development of the interdisciplinary, interfaculty activities in the Water Research strategic research area at the University of Duisburg-Essen and the UA Ruhr (Research Center One Health Ruhr) are also desirable.

The successful candidate should have experience in the development of digital, resilient, adaptive infrastructure and operating concepts using data-based and AI-based methods as well as experience with innovative concepts for the treatment and reduction of contamination in watercourses due to rainwater and mixed water discharge. Furthermore, experience in closing material loops in urban water management with a focus on wastewater and sewage sludge as a resource is desirable.

We place particular importance on the willingness to collaborate and transfer knowledge with municipalities, regional water management partners, industry and others.

Candidates should also have specific didactic experience, e.g. in the further development and implementation of modern didactic concepts, particularly using digital tools (such as AI-supported applications, the integration of language models and data-driven analysis in teaching); specific engineering issues and their implementation in practice using technical rules and standards; advanced classes in areas such as specialised software applications for urban wastewater management engineering; and active participation in international study programmes conducted in English.

Applicants are requested to submit a brief outline of their approach to research and teaching.
The successful candidate will be appointed with civil servant status and permanent tenure in salary band W3 (provided that the requirements resulting from public employment law are met).

Publications in peer-reviewed scientific and relevant journals, patents, publications in relevant conference proceedings as well as experience in the competitive acquisition of self-conceived or managed research projects, preferably DFG-funded or internationally comparable projects, and their successful implementation are expected.

The University of Duisburg-Essen places particular emphasis on teaching quality. Therefore, candidates must outline their didactic concepts, also taking the profile of the University of Duisburg-Essen into consideration.

Criteria for appointment are based on Section 36 of the NRW Higher Education Act (HG).
The University of Duisburg-Essen strives to promote the diversity of its members (https://www.uni-due.de/diversity/en/). The University also aims to increase the ratio of women in its academic staff and therefore strongly encourages women with relevant qualifications to apply. If two candidates are equally qualified, women will be given preference as stipulated in the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (LGG NRW). Applications from qualified candidates with disabilities or equivalent status as defined in Section°2 (3) of Book IX of the German Social Code (SGB IX) are encouraged.

Applications should include the usual documents (CV including information on both your academic and professional experience, a list of academic publications, copies of relevant certificates, a description of your research profile and the resulting perspectives for the University of Duisburg-Essen, a teaching and learning concept that takes the University of Duisburg-Essen’s profile into account, information on your teaching activities, your involvement in academic self-governance and external funds that you have obtained to date).

Please submit your application by post or in electronic form by 06 November 2026 to:

dekanat@iw.uni-due.de
