Full Professor of Data Science Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)
The Faculty of Sciences at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for a
Full Professor of Data Science (salary group W3)
at the Department of Data Science. This is a full-time and permanent position to be filled by the earliest possible starting date.
The Department of Data Science (DDS) is currently being established. The professorship will explore fundamental principles of data science in a dynamic and collaborative departmental structure with agile teams working on forward-looking, interdisciplinary research topics.
We seek to appoint an internationally recognized researcher, at either an advanced or an early career stage, who demonstrates outstanding expertise in the mathematical aspects of data science.
The professorship is intended to refine and strengthen the profile of the Department of Data Science and to cover current research topics in the field of mathematical data science. The position requires a strong foundation in data-driven methods from several of the following areas: graph-based methods for data analysis and machine learning, analysis of manifold-valued data, variational methods for mathematical data processing, stability and robustness of deep learning methods, and nonlinear spectral theory. Successful candidates are expected to have an excellent research record in their respective fields. The research activities should also complement the existing research groups at FAU, particularly in the area of data science. Collaboration on interdisciplinary topics or applications is also desired. Substantial research experience abroad and/or experience in project management and the acquisition of third-party funding are desirable. The candidate is furthermore expected to contribute to the development of the Department of Data Science at FAU.
Teaching responsibilities include introductory and advanced courses for the data science degree programs (B.Sc. and M.Sc.). Participation in teaching other degree programs within the teaching unit Mathematics and Data Science, as well as in service teaching for students of other disciplines, is also expected.
The successful candidate will have an outstanding track record in research and teaching. They are required to have a university degree and a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline and additional postdoctoral qualifications (either a habilitation or equivalent academic qualifications). These qualifications may also have been achieved in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (for example as assistant professor).
The successful candidate is expected to carry out administrative duties and take a proactive approach to raising third-party funding. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are preferred.
In its pursuit of academic excellence, FAU is committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture, and values diversity. FAU is a family-friendly employer and responsive to the needs of dual career couples.
Please submit your complete application (CV, list of publications, list of previously taught courses and evaluations, teaching concept [1 page] and research concept [max. 3 pages], list of third-party funding, copies of certificates and degrees) in English online at https://berufungen.fau.de by October 14, 2026, addressed to the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences.
