Associate Professor of Church Music Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)
The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for a
Associate Professor of Church Music
(salary group W2)
at the Institute of Practical Theology at the School of Theology. This is a full-time and permanent position to be filled by the earliest possible starting date. The professor will also assume the position of University Music Director.
We seek to appoint an internationally recognized leader in church music to teach and conduct research in the discipline including, for instance, hymnology relating to a wide range of liturgical and musical practices used in church services. In particular, the professor will be expected to introduce students of all subjects to the discipline and to teach them relevant skills. The professor will be expected to work closely with the University chaplain, the Institute for Practical Theology and with musical, church-music and liturgical institutions both within the university and beyond. The professor will be responsible for church music during the university church services.
The successful candidate will have an outstanding track record in research and teaching. They are required to have a degree in Protestant church music (Master’s / A-Exam or an equivalent qualification), usually also a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline and additional academic qualifications (either a habilitation or equivalent academic qualifications). These qualifications may also have been achieved in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (for example as Assistant Professor).
In view of the professor’s involvement in the School of Theology as well as in the area of university music, candidates are also expected to meet the profile of a professor of the performing musical arts. In addition to the mentioned academic qualifications and an interest in theology, proficiency in artistic performance and demonstrable artistic accomplishments are expected. This applies in particular to choral conducting, the performance of organ recitals as well as the teaching of organ performance (including tuition leading to qualifications for playing church music as a secondary profession equivalent to the Große Prüfung für das kirchenmusikalische Nebenamt [C-Prüfung] in Germany) and the ability to work with various ensembles, including those specializing in pop music.
The successful candidate is expected to carry out administrative duties and take a proactive approach to raising third-party funding. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are preferred.
In its pursuit of academic excellence, FAU is committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture, and values diversity. FAU is a family-friendly employer and responsive to the needs of dual career couples.
Please submit your complete application (CV including artistic activities, list of publications and teaching, teaching concept, a concept for university music, a gender and diversity concept [max. 2 pages each], list of third-party funding, copies of certificates and degrees) online at https://berufungen.fau.de by October 15, 2026, addressed to Prof. Dr. Ursula Roth. Please contact phil-berufungen@fau.de with any questions.
