W3 PROFESSORSHIP FOR MATERIALS SCIENCE (M/F/D)
The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum invites applicants for a full professorship in Materials Science for its Institute for Materials (IM) who can take office starting April 1st, 2025. Research in materials science is one research stronghold of RUB. We offer an attractive research environment with very well-equipped laboratories and attractive career paths for students of different materials disciplines.
Research should focus on nano- and microstructures of engineering materials and materials design. The applicant should be familiar with using advanced analytical scanning and transmission electron microscopy for studying elementary processes, which govern the evolution of microstructures of engineering materials during processing and the structural, mechanical (e.g. high temperature materials) and functional (e.g. energy conversion) performance of materials. A scale bridging research approach, from the atomistic scale to the macro scale, is expected.
For teaching we seek candidates who can offer materials science classes on the bachelor and master level. Introductory classes should focus on microstructures and mechanical properties of materials exposed to harsh environments. Classes for advanced students should address thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of solid-state reactions, elementary deformation and damage mechanisms, and analytical electron microscopy.
In collaboration with other materials scientists from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, results from microscopic studies should be interpreted bridging size and time scales as appropriate. A successful scientific track record, positive evaluation as a junior professor, habilitation or equivalent academic achievement, and a willingness to participate in academic self-administration are expected. In addition, particular aptitude and a high level of commitment to teaching as well as the willingness and ability to teach courses in German and English are expected.
We are looking for a personality, who has demonstrated scientific quality in applying electron microscopy to material problems and who can bridge the gap between applied and basic materials research. Applicants should have international experience, should be familiar with collaborative research projects and/or should be able to demonstrate a successful career in a material related R&D branch in industry. Excellent research output with publications in peer reviewed international journals is expected. An active role in the interdisciplinary Materials Research Department (MRD) and in the Centre of Interface dominated High Performance Materials (ZGH) is expected. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate their willingness and proven ability to acquire significant third-party funding.
The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
Applications including a motivation letter, a CV, a list of publications, a research concept (max. 3 pages), a concept for teaching (max. 2 pages), a list of third party funded projects as well as degrees / certificates should be sent by
