The Faculty of Engineering at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for a
Tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Machine Elements in the Context of Electromobility
(salary group W1)
at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The position is to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of three years. Upon successful evaluation, the appointment will be extended for another three years. FAU offers the long-term perspective of a permanent appointment to an associate professorship if the requirements of the tenure evaluation are met.
The professorship will be co-funded from the Federal and State program run by the German government for supporting early career researchers. The professorship is located in the research-intensive field of “Future Energy Systems”.
We seek to appoint a top early career scientist with an internationally visible profile in research and teaching. The candidate should develop outstanding expertise in the field. Candidates applying for the position are expected to have conducted outstanding research in the following areas:
- Behavior of machine elements in electrical fields or when exposed to electrical current, development of innovative solutions to avoid damage under the above-mentioned conditions,
- Integration of sensors / actuators in machine elements to adjust functions to meet the requirements of e-mobility,
- Methods of artificial intelligence, in particular machine learning processes and their application for monitoring and controlling sensor-integrated machine elements and for analysis, prediction, and optimization of reliability
Leadership experience and relevant experience in industry or in conducting research and innovation projects with industry are expected.
The professor will be involved in teaching in the degree programs offered by the Department and neighboring subjects taught at the Faculty of Engineering. In particular, the professor will be expected to teach lectures in the new degree program “Electromobility-ACES”.
Successful candidates should demonstrate initial academic achievements and the capacity for independent research at the highest international standards. They should have substantial research experience abroad and/or experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and relevant teaching experience are also prerequisites. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are preferred.
No more than four years should have passed between the conferral of the doctoral degree and deadline of the call for applications; this period may also be extended due to periods of supporting a family or caring for a family member. The date of the doctoral certificate is decisive. Candidates should have changed universities after the doctoral degree or undertaken a research position of at least two years at a university other than FAU.
The successful candidate should become actively involved in administering academic affairs and in developing strategic initiatives. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods.
