Tenure Track Assistant Professor

» Animal Health Genomics «

The research focus of this professorship should be on the identification of genetic loci relevant to (complex) animal traits, especially those related to animal health. Research findings will inform conventional and new breeding methods designed to improve animal health, including husbandry strategies tailored to individual animals to improve their wellbeing.

» Digital Health and Behaviour Monitoring «

The remit of this new professorship is to investigate digital technologies to monitor animal behaviour and health with relevance to agriculture, life sciences and neurosciences. Specifically, robust criteria should be identified to measure the influence of environmental factors (e.g. housing conditions, environmental enrichment, nutrition, diseases) on animal health and wellbeing, and thus enable improvements.

» Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases «

This newly established position will focus on the mechanisms involved in immune defense against infectious agents with economic relevance, focusing on host-pathogen-interactions in livestock species. Beyond basic science, research findings should provide a basis for the prevention and control of (zoonotic) diseases.

The three positions are W2 fixed-term positions (6 years) with tenure track option to a tenured W3 position (Associate Professor). The professorship ‘Digital Health and Behaviour Monitoring‘ is funded by the Federal Tenure Track Programme.

Scientific environment
The professorships belong to the TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan. Successful candidates will have access to core-facilities for high-throughput sequencing, proteomics, imaging, FACS analysis and sorting as well as small and large animal facilities (S1 and S2). A state-of-the-art multifunctional large animal facility is currently being planned, and there will be opportunity for design input. The three professorships will focus on animal health and wellbeing, from the genetic basis to the monitoring of health and disease and the modulation of the biological processes involved.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include research and teaching as well as the promotion of early-career scientists. The teaching load includes courses in the university‘s bachelor and master programs. Candidates should enjoy teaching and be willing to collaborate with other research departments within the School of Life Sciences (e.g. Nutrition and Food Sciences, Bio Sciences), as well as with other departments of the TUM (e.g. Department of Informatics, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Medicine).

Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who have demonstrated initial scientific achievements and the capacity for independent research at the highest international standards. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification as well as pedagogical aptitude, including the ability to teach in English, are prerequisite. Substantial research experience abroad is expected.
