Tenure-Track Research Group Leader
The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG)
is seeking a research group leader in the field of economic sociology
to begin work on October 1, 2018, or earlier.
The MPIfG aims to develop an empirically based theory of the social and political
foundations of modern economies by investigating the interrelation between
the economy, society, and politics. The precise focus of the group leader’s research
field is open. The successful candidate will contribute to the research program of the MPIfG.
The research group will be made up of the research group leader, one postdoc and two doctoral students. The successful
candidate is expected to be involved in teaching and PhD advising at the International Max Planck Research School on the
Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE, imprs.mpifg.de). A strong knowledge of methods, either
quantitative or qualitative, is necessary.
Applicants must have several years of postdoctoral research experience. A PhD in sociology or a related discipline and an
excellent research track record are required. The salary is based on the German public sector W2 salary scale. Performance-
related pay is available in addition to the basic salary.
The contract is initially for five years, with the possibility of tenure. The tenure decision will depend on a positive evaluation
and the approval of a committee of the Max Planck Society’s Human Sciences Section on positions at the Associate Professor (W2) level.
The Max Planck Society is committed to improving the opportunities for women in science and explicitly encourages women to apply.
We support our employees in achieving work and family life balance. We are also committed to employing more individuals with
disabilities and encourage such applicants to apply.
Please submit your application as a single PDF including a cover letter, your CV, copies of your degree certificates, a publication
list, a 2-to-3-page research proposal for the suggested research group, and the names and addresses of two referees, by January
