The Institute of Sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Germany, is seeking to fill the following position (civil servant or equivalent salaried employee status) at the earliest possible date:

of Social Theory and Social Research

The post as full professor at the Institute of Sociology is combined with the position as

Director of the Institute for Social Research

The post is a cooperative appointment by the Faculty of Social Sciences of Goethe University Frankfurt and the Institute for Social Research. The Institute for Social Research, established in 1923 as an independent foundation under civil law, sees its work in the tradition of critical theory. Its aim is the interdisciplinary analysis of current patterns of capitalist development, also from the perspective of a theoretical and generalised interpretation, through wide-ranging research activities in the areas of social science and social philosophy. The task of the professorship is to further develop a social theory that is normatively rich in content and empirically substantiated.
The successful applicant will have a background either in critical social theory with considerable expertise in sociological tradition as well as an interest in and understanding of empirical social research or in empirical social research with extensive knowledge of social philosophical theorizing.
It is furthermore expected that he/she is willing to assume a responsible role in current and planned research projects at the Institute for Social Research, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the University as well as in academic self-administration. The incumbent will also be involved in the University’s teaching degree programmes. In view of the position at the Institute for Social Research, the successful candidate should possess leadership qualities, to be exercised in cooperation with the Institute’s staff and board members. Habilitation (or equivalent) in the field of social philosophy or social sciences as well as teaching experience are required. Due to the management function to be assumed at the Institute for Social Research, the intention is to reduce teaching load to 4 hours of instruction per week.
