to be exercised in conjunction with the post of
Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in AachenWe are seeking a qualified individual for teaching and research in the field of laser technology. The starting date will be October 2019. In terms of research, the professorship focuses on the subject of laser technology – taking an integrated as well as a trans- and interdisciplinary approach. The research primarily encompasses two major priority areas: "beam source development" and "laser technology applications". In line with these priority areas, the teaching required should also be viewed in terms of two partial but complementary aspects: (1) engineering applications (e.g. joining, separating, ablating, drilling, and surface modification); (2) physical principles (of processes such as beam generation or light-material interaction). That being the case, there is a high level of cooperation with the physics department. In addition, the holder of the professorship is responsible for the Photonics Cluster on the RWTH Campus, including a research facility established under Art. 91b of the Basic Law.
The professorship is associated with the post of Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, which spans scientific-technical and entrepreneurial management and development of the institute within the Fraunhofer model and the overall strategy of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
In addition to working collaboratively within RWTH, the holder of the professorship will be required to maintain close ties with both national and international partners from research and industry.

These may have been attained by gaining a postdoctoral qualification (habilitation); whilst serving as a junior professor or as an academic at a university or research institute; or during a career in business, administration, or some other social sphere. In addition, you are expected to have proven teaching abilities. You have many years of experience leading large interdisciplinary research groups and are also familiar with the strategic planning, acquisition and execution of large-volume national and international R&D projects in various business areas. Furthermore, you are skilled in technology utilization and increasing efficiency in development processes. We anticipate that the person appointed will have a proven track record and international connections.
Please include with your application the usual supporting documents: academic and professional profile; lists of publications, third-party funded projects, and lecture programs; research and teaching concepts; teaching evaluations; copies of testimonials and certificates.
