The Faculty of Linguistics, Cultures, and Arts, Institute for the Study of Culture and Religion of Islam at the Goethe University Frankfurt welcomes applications for the following position starting as soon as possible:

Professorship (W1, tenure track)
for the Study of Islamic Norms

The appointment depends on the further funding of the Center for Islamic Studies by the BMBF and is initially limited to six years. Upon positive evaluation a permanent position on the level "W2" of the German university scale will be offered according to § 64 "Hessisches Hochschulgesetz".
The future holder of the position will be responsible to represent the study of Islamic Norms in its breadth and historical development. The applicant must be able to represent parts/fields of the Islamic theory of norms (Islamic law, legal methodology and hermeneutics) in teaching and should be recognized in at least one area for relevant research. The professorship is expected to contribute towards derivation of Islamic norms in the contemporary world through independent research.
In teaching, the existing BA and MA Islamic Studies programs are to be supervised. The duties also include the establishment of an interdisciplinary "Forum for Law and Ethics in Islam" in cooperation with other chairs of the Centre for Islamic Studies and (in cooperation with) other relevant faculties of the University, in particular, Law, Economic and Political Science.
Applicants need to have an excellent doctorate in a relevant field of Islamic Studies such as Islamic Theology or "Islamwissenschaft" as well as a monograph or equivalent publication related to Islamic normative teachings. Excellent language skills in German, Arabic, English and knowledge of at least one other language of Islamic Studies (Turkish, Persian, Urdu etc.) are required. Reading ability of a classical language (Greek, Hebrew, Latin etc.) and another European language (French, Spanish, Italian) are preferable. Willingness to develop new courses and expertise in the inter-theological and interdisciplinary discourse are also expected. In addition to educational qualification and relevant experience in teaching higher education, aid in doctoral projects is also expected. Other desirable qualifications include contacts in the Islamic studies and Islamic theology departments in universities in Germany and abroad, experience in organizing scientific events, coordination of publication work and willingness to design, acquire and implement externally funded projects.
The designated salary for the position is initially based on "W1" on the German university scale or equivalent.
