Professor of African History
(pay grade: W2 / W3)

to commence 1 October 2017. This permanent civil service position is offered with the possibility of being promoted to a W-3 professor upon a successful performance review of research and teaching in accordance with the Bayreuth-Track Personnel Development Model for professors at the University of Bayreuth.
The Professor of African History is responsible for covering the entire spectrum of the subject area. Applicants are to provide evidence of extensive teaching and research experience in African history with a focus on the 19th and 20th centuries, experience in acquiring external funding, a record of internationally visible research, and an innovative research focus that complements Bayreuth’s existing research expertise in history. A global historical, theory-based perspective on research and teaching is desirable.
The incumbent will be integrated into the University of Bayreuth’s focus areas, especially African Studies. He or she will help further develop the study of history in Bayreuth with a diverse range of collaboration within the University of Bayreuth and will be actively involved in cooperative research programmes. The appointee’s teaching duties will be in the bachelor’s and master’s programmes History, African Culture & Society, History & Economics, and the graduate school BIGSAS.
Requirements for this position (according to Article 7 and Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG) are a university degree, doctoral degree, Habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification), and proven excellence in teaching. Evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. The ability to teach in the English language is expected. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants (Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG).
