We are looking for an ambitious post-doctoral researcher to develop materials for a VW funded project in the area of soft robotics. The start time is at the earliest possible moment. The contract will be for a duration of 3 years with a possibility of extension.
The project aims for the generation of a macroscopic biohybrid, hydrogel-based actuator with actuation by cells. These will be grown on a molecularly defined, responsive material and stimulated to contract. Local, externally controllable variations in the hydrogel will control the level of contraction. In this way, different actuator movements on the macroscale will be possible. The final goal is a prototype of such a novel actuator, and a thorough investigation of the complete system from the molecular scale to the macroscopic device, particularly with regards to actuation efficiency.
This is a collaborative project with the group of Prof. Selhuber-Unkel at the Faculty of Engineering at Kiel University (http://www.tf.uni-kiel.de/matwis/bnano/en) who will develop the biophysical aspects of the project.
The person we are looking to hire in Bremen will be concerned with the synthesis and rheological analysis of the materials.
The candidate must have a Ph. D. in chemistry or a related field in the physical sciences. They must have sound experience and knowledge in organic synthesis and ideally some experience with rheology and the characterisation of polymers in general and hydrogels in particular.
We expect them to have aspirations to pursue a career in academia.
At present, the project is funded for three years; if the project is successful, further funding can be applied for. The successful candidate will be appointed subject to the approval of human resources. It is desirable that the candidate will actively compete for third party funding during the time they hold the post to extend their research stay.
  • Synthesis of new stimuli responsive hydrogels and their characterisation
  • Regular literature survey of the topic
  • Rheology
  • Supervising project students, B. Sc. students and M. Sc. students assisting on this project.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration with the group of Prof. Selhuber-Unke.
  • Active participation in regular retreats for the development of the project
  • Disseminating the results of the project in high profile international journals and on conferences
  • Completed undergraduate degree in one of the natural sciences and successfully completed Ph. D.
  • Sound knowledge of polymer chemistry and materials synthesis.
  • In-depth knowledge of analytical methods (IR, UV/Vis, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry). Competences in the theoretical calculation of material relevant parameters are desirable.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently, being well organised.
  • Excellent written and oral communication in English. Communication skills in German are helpful.
