Job description

The Integrated Optical Systems group of the Optical Sciences (OS) Chair of the Faculty of Science and Technology and MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology of the University of Twente, The Netherlands, has an opening for a post-doctoral fellow within the research area of integrated optical sensors for the early diagnostics of diseases. In particular, the successful candidate will join the H2020 project GLAM.

In GLAM (Glass-Laser Multiplexed Biosensor), a consortium of 10 European partners strives to develop groundbreaking technology that will help oncologists make better decisions, approaching personalized medicine, in a cost-effective and non-invasive manner.

Specifically, GLAM will design and develop a point-of-care diagnostics tool to detect biomarkers from biofluids obtained in a non-invasive manner, focusing on urine and genitourinary cancers. The developed integrated device will be based on novel label-free photonic biosensors with ultra-sensitivity, simplicity of use, portability, multiplexing and low cost. To that aim, GLAM capitalizes on the unprecedented sensitivity achieved using laser microring resonators to detect key biomarkers in tumor development and treatment. Point-of-Care sample analysis will be made possible by this new device in a preclinical and clinical personalized treatment for patients suffering from genito-urinary cancer. Importantly, the unique GLAM technology will make the device also usable with other biofluids and might also be used to help physicians with biomarker-driven management of other diseases.

Within the GLAM project, the post-doctoral fellow will work closely with the PhD student in the design, fabrication and characterization of integrated rare-earth doped aluminum oxide microring lasers to be used as highly stable and sensitive sensors. The devices will be multiplexed in a silicon nitride platform. Both silicon nitride and aluminum oxide platforms are currently working platforms in our group. Work will still be necessary in the integration of the two platforms to realize highly functional and performing devices.

The successful applicant is a highly motivated researcher with intellectual curiosity, who possesses good communication and collaborative skills to thrive within our international team. We expect the candidate to have obtained a PhD in Applied Physcis, Electrical Engineering or in a closely related discipline. Knowledge of integrated optics is required, specifically the design and characterization of integrated on-chip lasers. Micro/nano fabrication skills are also an asset, including hands-on experience with ebeam lithography. He/she has an interest in research, is capable of co-supervising MSc and PhD students and has an open mind and good communicative skills in English (knowledge of Dutch is not required).

Application procedure:

Applications should include:
  • A complete CV including full publication list, title and abstract of PhD thesis and at least two academic references.
  • A motivation letter indicating the reasons why the candidate wants to work in the GLAM Project and why he/she is a good fit for the position.
  • A pdf of the candidate’s publication most relevant for the project.
Please, submit the three documents in pdf format using the link below.

Conditions of employment

We offer a 24 months post-doctoral researcher position (40 h/week) in a dynamic and international environment. The position is expected to start before April 2017, although a later starting date can be negotiated. The salary will be in scale 10 (CAO-NU) and will depend on the relevant experience in this field of expertise.

Additionally, the University of Twente provides excellent facilities for professional and personal development, a holiday allowance (8%) and an end-of-year bonus (8,3%), and a number of additional benefits. Your main responsibility will be to carry out research, but you will be given the opportunity to acquire some teaching experience as well.

In case of equal qualifications, recruitment will be conducted with an attention to fostering gender, age, linguistic and national diversity. Hence, submissions from international candidates and/or from candidates from academically under-represented groups are welcome.
