One of the main research topics of the Elastomer Technology & Engineering group is filler technology for elastomers. These fillers are added for reinforcing, but also for optimization of the dynamic properties of the material, known as performance indicators for tires.
One of the latest developments in tire technology is the replacement of carbon black as a filler by a silica/silane system. However, the latter technology has its shortcomings, in spite of the advantages of lowering rolling resistance. Processing of these compounds is rather devious and time-consuming, as a chemical reaction has to take place between silica and silane during mixing. Besides, this filler system does not work for truck tires due to a high percentage of natural rubber.
Within this project, a pre-treatment of the silica will be developed, making the silica/silane reaction during mixing redundant. Two processes will be used for this purpose: Molecular Layer Deposition (MLD) and Plasma Deposition (PD). The modified silica will be characterized as such by surface-sensitive analytical methods and it will be tested in elastomers concerning reinforcing effect, mechanical and dynamic properties. Besides, the elastomer-filler interface has to be analyzed. Finally, the best process has to be chosen and scaled up for tire tests.
We require 1 PhD candidate with a strong interest and established experience in elastomers. Further requirements are:
- MSc degree in Chemical Engineering or Material Science
- Background in MLD and PD techniques
- Experiences with experimental laboratory work
- Analytical skills in surface characterization and elastomer properties
- Critical and creative approach to the research, as well as sharp analytical skills
- Pro-active and result-oriented team worker in an industrial as well academic environment
- Capability to solve problems independently, but also being able to work with interdisciplinary teams
- Good communication and interpersonal skills to organize research with both, academics and professionals
- Being able to work in an international and diverse team
- Good communication (verbal and writing) skills in English. You need to provide IELTS test results (minimum score 6.5), TOEFL-iBT (minimum score 90) or Cambridge CAE or CPE.
