Participation/Task leader within the DFG (German Research Community)-Research Project "Remote measurement of liquid water film thickness, temperature, and composition using near-infrared absorption": In numerous technical processes stationary or transient aqueous liquid films play a role, e.g., in aqueous solutions and multiphase systems with a high water content (gels, biological culture media). In addition, highly dynamic aqueous fluid films form during spray-wall interaction. The thickness of the resulting films is often not easily measured and difficult to model. In all these cases suitable measurement techniques are required that provide quantitative information - if possible non-intrusive and with high temporal and spatial resolution. Quantities of interest are film thickness as well as temperature and concentration of dissolved species. Measurements are desired with high spatial and temporal resolution for the investigation of highly dynamic processes in practical sys-tems. In literature only few quantitative optical techniques are known, none of them provide the above mentioned combination of properties. This is the main motivation for the current research project.
The following subtasks need to be realized: a) Develop strategies for the measurement of aqueous film thickness via absorption of near-infrared laser radiation, which are able for highly dynamic data acquisition as required, e.g., in spraywall interaction; b) Modify the techniques to enable measurements of thickness, temperature, and solute concentrations in turbid media (e.g., gels and emulsions); c) Simplify the measurement system through the use of more robust and cheaper broadband light sources; d) Extend the absorption-based diagnostics for the measurement of film properties deposited on non-transparent surfaces; e) Enhance the sensitivity by using diode lasers emitting at longer wavelengths; f) Extend the technique from point to planar measurements using near-infrared cameras. FTIR absorption spectra from well-defined samples will enable a quantification and the development of data reduction strategies.
The listed research tasks will enable the applicant to prepare a dissertation for obtaining the degree of a PhD. The participation for preparing and conducting teaching sessions is anticipated.
You have graduated in physics, chemistry, or engineering. Practical experience in optical diagnostics, optics design and/or spectroscopy is appreciated.
