About employer University of Twente (UT)
Construction projects are dynamic and complex projects with a wide variety of stakeholders and interests. Their unique character (no mass production) and realization and/or maintenance in complex environments (built environment of cities, networks of infrastructure) imposes various challenges. Moreover, the construction industry is characterized as a highly fragmented market. Regulation prohibits contractors and engineering agencies to develop long-term relationships with public clients. Changes in the financial systems and public procurement frequently create severe up- and downturns for the industry. These high financial and liability risks pushes the organization of work towards fragmented supply chains. Decision-making, project planning, and execution are cut in several phases and involve a great number of public and private stakeholders. Construction projects are transitory coalition organizations. Institutional and contractual frameworks create interfaces, inter-organizational barriers and sub-optimization. Within this fragmented structure, the success and failure of infrastructure management and projects depends heavily on integration, coordination and cooperation. New challenges for the industry require overcoming fragmentation in the infrastructure life cycle and the enhancement of the integration of the construction project delivery. The thrive of the group is to study, develop and teach new process approaches, methods and technologies to enhance Integration and Innovation for the infrastructure life cycle and integrated project delivery.
The group of Construction Management & Engineering (CME) is an international center of excellence developing new scientific insights and approaches while improving the performance of the construction industry. The group’s unique focus lies on innovative approaches for involving stakeholders within the complete value chain and integrating social and technical aspects in construction management (High Tech - Human Touch). We have developed strong links with the industry, develop new methods and technologies and publish in Engineering journals as well as Management journals. The core areas of expertise in the CME group are:
- Engineering design methodologies (as systems engineering, design science and modular and platform based development of infrastructures and buildings),
- ICT technologies (as BIM & data management)
- Life Cycle Approaches for Infrastructure Asset Management,
- Inter organizational boundary spanning (procurement, contracting, supply chain management).
- Risk & Project management (risk management, project management, process management)
- Specific effort and attention is given to integrate and create cross-overs.
The University of Twente is well known for its innovative approach to teaching, with student-driven learning and project-led education as the core pillars of its BSc- and MSc-programmes, The Civil Engineering programmes reflect the university’s multidisciplinary focus and its entrepreneurial character. In our BSc-programme, designed according to the Twente Educational Model, we train students to become T-shaped professionals with deep knowledge in the field of Civil Engineering and the ability to apply this knowledge in a meaningful way in the broader context and taking into account relevant aspects from different fields. Particular attention is paid to research, design and organisational skills such that students will discover their individual strengths. In the MSc-programmes students acquire state-of-the art knowledge and will further improve their learning capacity such that they are able to acquire new knowledge themselves and are able to create solutions for complex multidisciplinary problems. Within the BSc, MSc and PDEng programmes the chair will particularly carry responsibility for education in the field of project management, integrated project delivery, and risk management.
The chair is one of the core pillars of the civil engineering and construction management programmes (BSc, MSc and PDEng). While focussing on integrated project delivery the research effort of this chair is particularly amid at bridging the gap between planning, construction and asset management. Construction projects are dynamic and complex projects with a wide variety of stakeholders and interests. Understanding these processes and designing approaches to manage these interests form the thrive of this chair. The chair is expected to contribute to support systems for complex decision-making processes particularly for: project delivery, risk and technology development and life cycle approaches. Integration within the project, and integration of the project in the infrastructure network are seen as key in this respect.
The University of Twente and the Faculty of Engineering Technology have identified key prospect domains for education and research. The domains relevant for Civil Engineering and CME are: "SMART Cities" and "Maintenance". The chair will play a core role in the further development and anchoring of these themes in the educational programmes and research trajectories.
Next to the direct research connections within the cluster of Civil Engineering, related research prospects within the UT identified:
- Within the Engineering Faculty and SBE: "maintenance" and "systems engineering"
- Within BMS and IGS: "Design science" and Technology management and Supply
- Overarching theme: "Smart cities" and Center for Risk Management, Safety and Security
The chair is and the group are embedded in the cluster Civil Engineering; one of the clusters within the Engineering faculty. The cluster of Civil Engineering also holds the Center for Transport Studies and the group of Water Engineering & Management.
Chair is responsible for his research group and is one of the six chairs of the group of Civil Engineering and Management
