The IRTG 1524, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and associated with the Technische Universität Berlin, offers a doctoral scholarship in THEORETICAL soft-matter and interface research: Project B 10 - M. Schoen: „Self-assembly of discotic liquid crystals at nanocolloids“ Project description: Using Monte Carlo and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics computer simulations, the phase behavior, structure, and dynamics of a discotic liquid crystal in the vicinity of a spherical nanocolloidal particle will be investigated. The liquid-crystalline carrier fluid will be in an ordered (e.g., columnar) mesophase such that different surface anchoring of liquid crystal molecules will give rise to specific defect topologies. Their response to thermodynamic fields (i.e., temperature T or pressure P) as well as to flow will be investigated. Requirements: Master degree in theoretical physics/chemistry or a related field of science. Good knowledge in the statistical mechanics of soft matter systems and in numerical simulations. Programming skills in C (C++), FORTRAN9x, and CUDA are desirable. Excellent command of the English language and a strong interest in fundamental research are indispensable prerequisites. Framework: The IRTG 1524 is run by a joint consortium: Technische Unversität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces and four US universities: North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina, Duke University, and University of Pennsylvania. Doctoral fellows will receive a stipend of € 1,468 per month, incl. material cost allowance. Additional childcare allowance will be granted if applicable.
