Associate Professor / Assistant Professor / Lecturer

GUtech’s Department of Urban Planning and Architectural Design is seeking applications for faculty positions at the ranks of:

Associate Professor / Assistant Professor / Lecturer

in the areas of Urban Planning and Design, Architecture, Building Construction, as well as Computer Aided Design.

The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) was established in collaboration with and is affiliated to RWTH Aachen University. Its vision is to become a leading university of technology in the wider Gulf region by building on three pillars: education, research and innovation. GUtech provides students with the education required to become highly qualified and socially responsible graduates, guided by German excellence and with a firm grounding in Oman’s culture and heritage.

GUtech’s study programmes are accredited by the German academic quality assurance agency ACQUIN, enabling graduates to continue their postgraduate education abroad. The university’s standards were recently reconfirmed through a successful evaluation by the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD as well as through a re-accreditation by AQUIN.

The Department of Urban Planning and Architectural Design (UPAD) is dedicated to provide students with the knowledge and skills to plan and design in the context of the region’s rapidly growing urban environment. GUtech’s campus itself accommodates some examples of award-winning architecture, the GUtech main building, the EcoHaus as well as a Museum for the History of Sciences in the Islamic World. Further, the department has set up a construction yard to practice sustainable building methods with students. The department’s activities are structured around four fields: urban planning and design, architecture and building construction, visual communication, as well as history and theory.

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to demonstrate excellent capabilities as educators. Practical as well as professional experience in the field is required and should be demonstrated through projects, built works and/or competition entries. Research ambitions and output should be shown in form of articles, papers, or conference participations. Applicants should have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work within a multi-cultural team environment. The language of instruction at GUtech is English. Residency in Muscat is required.

Responsibilities

Urban Planning and Design: The applicant must have a background in urban planning with a very clear emphasis on large scale planning processes. He/she is expected to work independently in teaching, research and consultancy; however, a strong coordination with the department’s other activities in this field is required.

Architecture: The applicant must have a background in architecture with a very clear emphasis on design. He/she is expected to work independently in teaching, research and consultancy; however, a strong coordination with the department’s other activities in this field is required.

Building Construction: The applicant should (but not necessarily must) have a background in architecture with a very clear emphasis on building construction, structural design and building physics. He/she is expected to work independently in teaching, research and consultancy; however, a strong coordination with the department’s other activities in this field is required.

Computer Aided Design: The applicant should (but not necessarily must) have a background in architecture with a very clear emphasis on CAD, visual communication, BIM, and digital simulation tools. He/she is expected to work independently in teaching, research and consultancy; however, a strong coordination with the department’s other activities in this field is required.

Our Offer

GUtech offers an international and dynamic academic environment. The appointment is initially for two to four years and renewable, dependent on positive performance reviews. The salary is internationally competitive. The employer will be the German University of Technology in Oman. Offers are subject to receiving Omani teaching and labor permits, which will be arranged by the university. The successful candidates are expected to take up employment by September 2017.
