The department of architecture (Fachbereich 15) at Technische
Universität Darmstadt invites applications for a
Assistant professorship (W2, Tenure Track)
for Modern and Contemporary
Architectural History, Architectural Theory
and Architectural Studies
(Code. No. 525)
The assistant professorship forms part of the research group "Historical
Foundations of Architecture". In collaboration with the research group
"Classical Archaeology" (focus on antiquity) and the research group
"History of Architecture and Art", the professorship represents the
historical, theoretical, artistic as well as the social foundations of
European history of architecture in the research and teaching of the
bachelor’s and master’s programme in architecture. Further, the
professorship shall supervise doctorates and post-doctoral qualifications
in the field of architectural studies. It shall also develop the interdisciplinary
research and the international networks of the department
of architecture.
This assistant professorship focuses on modern and contemporary
architecture and concerns itself with the contemporary history and
theory of architecture in a global context.
Architectural Studies is a new cross disciplinary extension of Architectural
History and Architectural Theory. Its purpose is to reflect the
design process theoretically and to progress the design studies methodically
in cooperation with the design professions.
Further, the department intends to develop a new exploratory focus
on the theory and history of digital architecture. Since the 1990s,
architecture has almost been exclusively designed by computer, which
represents a challenge for historians and theorists. To answer these
questions, the professorship should conduct research in such research
fields as: the design process, digital designing, forms of representation,
digital fabrication processes in construction as well as the content
related aspects of cataloguing and permanent storage of digital work
materials for posterity.
The department thus seeks an architect with a concentration in the
history and theory of modern and contemporary architecture and
with relevant knowledge and competencies in the concentration to
be developed. The formal prerequisites for the application are a
completed doctoral thesis in the field of history and theory of architecture
(including the publication of the doctoral thesis) as well as further
scientific achievement in the requested research area.
Experiences in research, acquisition of external funding, teaching, and
university organization are also assumed, as well as the willingness to
respond to the specific concentrations and forms of teaching of a technically
and creatively oriented degree course. We thus expect a close
collaboration with the diverse disciplines of the Department of Architecture
and cooperation with other Departments of Technische Universität
Darmstadt.
Regulations on the maximum period of scientific activities after the
acquisition of the PhD degree as well as all additional requirements for
employment are subject to § 64 section 3 HHG in the respective current
versions. The assistant professorship is designed as qualification
professorship as per § 64 HHG. For the position the option for a
tenured full professorship after a successful tenure procedure is given.
The position is initially limited to six years. Remuneration follows the
German W-Besoldung at level W2 Hessisches Besoldungsgesetz.
The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number
of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In
case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at
least 50 or equal will be given preference. Part-time employment is
generally possible.
The Technische Universität Darmstadt is certified as a family-friendly
university and offers a dual career program.
Qualified applicants are invited to submit the following documents: a
concept paper (max. 2 pages) on the theme of "Theory and History of
Digital Architecture" that explains the possibilities and perspectives on
the development of this research agenda in the Department of Architecture
at Technische Universität Darmstadt. In addition, applicants
should include a CV, copies of transcripts and certificates of academic
examinations and appointments including certificate of having passed
the "university entrance qualification" (Abitur); a list of publications; a
description of research and teaching activities. Writings (publications)
are to be submitted upon request. All documents are to be addressed
in paper form to the to the Technische Universitaet Darmstadt,
Department of Architecture, Prof. Ariel Auslender, El-Lissitzky-Str. 1,
D-64287 Darmstadt.
Application deadline: January 31, 2018
