Uwe Rosemann turns 60: "There's still a lot to be done

Director of the German National Library of Science and Technology and University Library Hannover (TIB/UB) turns 60. He has been at TIB/UB for 20 years, 15 of which in the capacity of its Director - an occasion for reflection and for glimpsing into the future.

HANNOVER, 7 February 2013 - "Digitisation and globalisation due to the internet" are, in Uwe Rosemann's eyes, the greatest challenges TIB/UB has had to come to terms with in recent years. The library was quick to initiate the changes required to transform itself into a modern, internationally networked information service provider.

Regional and national target groups

The German National Library of Science and Technology and the University Library Hannover (TIB/UB) supplies students, researchers and teaching staff of all faculties of Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), as well as citizens in the region with an interest in science, with literature and specialised information. The national provision of literature and information for research and teaching purposes is one of the traditional tasks of the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB), the German National Library for all areas of engineering as well as architecture, chemistry, information technology, mathematics and physics.

Successful expansion of core tasks

In the past, TIB - a member of the Leibniz Association - has steadily expanded its core competencies. "One milestone in the development of the library is the enlargement to include digital products such as 3D objects, research data, audiovisual media and 'GetInfo', the portal for science and technology. Digital long-term archiving is another important strategic task," explained the library's Director. The library's Competence Centre for Non-Textual Materials (KNM) is in the process of developing a portal for audiovisual media (AV portal). The prototype is set to be presented at CeBIT in March 2013.

In 2005, TIB was the first library in the world to offer its services as a national digital object identifier (DOI) registration agency for referencing research data. Once research data has been registered, it is given a DOI name, meaning it can be cited, researched and permanently accessed. To date, TIB has given over 750,000 DOI names to research data, AV Media and grey literature making it the world's leading DOI service. "All in all, we are pursuing a future-oriented, sustainable overall strategy," summarised TIB/UB Director Uwe Rosemann.

Tackling challenges

"In the future, we will focus on expanding our research capacities. In cooperation with Leibniz Universität Hannover, we hope in 2014 to fill a professorship focusing on 'visual analytics', the nucleus of TIB's research area," stated Rosemann. In addition, TIB seeks to expand further cooperative activities at both European and international level, attending increasingly to European project support. Added to this are challenges specific to TIB: TIB/UB is to be transformed into an independent foundation called 'TIB' on 1 January 2015, which will encompass the university library. "These are the very processes, challenges and room for manoeuvre that I appreciate and love in my work as Director of TIB," Uwe Rosemann revealed. The Director is able to look back with satisfaction and to look ahead with boundless energy: "There's still a lot to be done!"

Personal details

Uwe Rosemann (* 7 February 1953) was appointed Director of the German National Library of Science and Technology and the University Library Hannover (TIB/UB) in 1998. After studying mathematics with sociology as his subsidiary subject at the University of Bielefeld, he embarked on a professional career as a specialist for mathematics and computer science at Bielefeld's university library in 1980. In 1990, Rosemann was appointed head of its department for library use and technology. He changed jobs in 1993, and was appointed Deputy Director of what was then UB/TIB in Hannover.

Rosemann has led large-scale, third-party funded projects and has worked on committees and as an expert for the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Rosemann is a member of scientific committees and commissions, and was chairman and board member of the library networks subito and vascoda.
