The Federal Ministry of Education and Research

Germany wants top international talent for industry and research. The plan is to have some 2 million qualified people by 2020. At national level, conditions have been created that will best assist young academics.

At the German federal government level, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) are responsible for scientific and academic matters. The ministry has specific institutions and programmes for promoting young, talented academics. It aims to promote exchanges between trainees, students and academics in order to extend research skills internationally.

What is funded

The BMBF funds a large part of the research programmes that assist junior academics and promote research projects. The ministry also pushes international collaboration in education, science, research and technology. As well as funding foundations and research, it subsidises technology-based company startups. On behalf of the ministry, the communication platform www.research-in-germany.de provides a good overview of the different research and education institutions.

Who can apply?

Science companies and universities, research bodies and other institutions may apply. Funding is primarily given to commercially-oriented research groups. Individual researchers are assisted via the appropriate research bodies.
