Genome of epidemic E. coli strain solved

Scientists from the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Virology and Hygiene of the University Hospital of Hamburg Eppendorf (UKE) have in close cooperation with scientist from BGI, the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and the Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology, Academy of Military Medical Sciences, have solved the genome of E. coli strain causative for the current epidemic of severe cases of haemolytic uremic syndrome in northern Europe.

Using latest third generation sequencing technology genetic evidence was created explaining the virulent potential and augmented antibiotic resistance of the current outbreak strain. The data obtained will allow the development of tailored diagnostic tests for rapid and precise detection of the current outbreak strain. In addition, genomic data will help to understand the epidemic potential and extensive virulence of the novel STEC strain.
