The table summarises the universities where research is a strength for educational science. A university is called strong in research if it is placed in the leader group in at least three of the six indicators. None of the universities studied achieved the maximum, but the University of Oldenburg achieved five top placings. Moreover, it is the first time that both this university and the University of Hildesheim have appeared in the top group.

No university has dropped out since last year. All the universities that appeared in 2004's group of strong research institutions remain. Only four of the strong research universities (HU and FU Berlin, the University of Bielefeld and LMU Munich) are also strong in terms of reputation, i.e. over 25 per cent of professors in the subject labelled them as research leaders.
