The Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University offers the position of a

W3 Endowed Professorship for Neuromodulation and Neuroprosthetics (f/m/d)

The successful candidate will be appointed head of the section of "Neuromodulation and Neuroprosthetics" of the Department of Neurosurgery at University Medical Center Mannheim.
The successful candidate should have a distinguished record of qualifications and accomplishments in all areas of neuromodulation and neuroprosthetics in research, teaching and patient care. She/he will provide patient care for the entire spectrum of neuromodulation and neuroprosthetics, including deep brain stimulation, peripheral neuromodulation, stereotactic procedures and - in the future - the application of brain-computer interfaces and neuroprostheses.
The concept of the W3 endowed professorship for neuromodulation and neuroprosthetics was outlined by the Dept. of Neurosurgery (Director: Prof. Dr. N. Etminan) together with the Dept. of Neurology (Director: Prof. Dr. M. Platten), the Center for Mental Health Mannheim (Chairman: Prof. Dr. A. Meyer-Lindenberg) and the Dept. for Hand, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, BG Klinik Ludwigshafen (Director: Prof. Dr. U. Kneser). The professorship will be funded by the Rolf M. Schwiete Foundation with the aim of establishing a supra-regional center for neuromodulation and neuroprosthetics. As a basis for this, a structured institutional collaboration of the Dept. of Neurosurgery Mannheim and the Dept. of Neurosurgery of the BG Clinic Ludwigshafen is currently being established regarding patient care.
In research, the applicant should develop innovative scientific and methodological approaches in central fields of neurology (e.g., movement disorders, neurodegeneration), psychiatry (e.g., cognitive disorders, depression, personality disorders), and neuroprosthetics (e.g., traumatic or degenerative sensory-motor function loss) with the aforementioned collaboration partners and promote clinical application through translational approaches. The future holder of the position should be a research-oriented personality with international visibility, high-ranking publications, successful innovative research projects, and extensive third-party funding. Furthermore, previous experience in the management of scientific collaborative projects should be demonstrated. In addition, in the context of translational neuroscience, active participation in the Mannheim Center for Translational Neuroscience (MCTN) is expected. Collaboration with other research focus areas and cross-sectional areas of the faculty (e.g. Medical Systems Technologies, Oncology, Vascular Biology and Medicine, and Preventive Medicine) as well as with the members of the Health and Life Science Alliance Heidelberg Mannheim is also expected.
Furthermore, the successful candidate should participate in the clinical teaching program in neurosurgery and related neuroscience subjects within MaReCuM, the restructured modular medical curriculum of the faculty. Prerequisites for application are a completed university degree, a qualified doctorate and according to § 47 (2) the Higher Education Law of the state of Baden-Württemberg, a habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship or a comparable scientific qualification as well as board certification in neurosurgery. In addition, international qualifications in clinical, translational and basic research as well as didactic competence, cooperation and leadership skills and commitment to academic self-administration are expected.
The position is available permanently. According to § 49 (2a) the Higher Education Law of the state of Baden-Württemberg, professors who are responsible for patient care in a university hospital are employed under private law and have tenure immediately. The W 3 professorship for "Neuromodulation and Neuroprosthetics" is associated with the management of the section "Neuromodulation and Neuroprosthetics" of the Dept. of Neurosurgery at University Medical Center Mannheim. In this regard, a separate contract will be concluded with the Universitätsklinikum Mannheim GmbH.
Applications with the usual documents should be submitted exclusively in electronic form and in accordance with the "Applicant Guideline Format Template" and the "Applicant Form" of the Medical Faculty Mannheim for W 3-professorships (see https://www.umm.uni-heidelberg.de/karriere/berufung/) - to Prof. Dr. med. Sergij Goerdt, Dean of the Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University, University Medical Center Mannheim, by February 22, 2023.
Heidelberg University stands for equal opportunities and diversity. We strongly encourage qualified women to apply. Persons with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are equally qualified. For information on job postings and data protection, please visit www.uni-heidelberg.de/en/job-market.
