With around 5,800 students and over 500 employees, Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences is a medium-sized university at the heart of Saxony-Anhalt. Our locations in Magdeburg, once an imperial residence and nowadays the state capital, and the Altmark town of Stendal, the Brick Gothic capital and birthplace of Winckelmann, have long been known for their creative spheres, and today also offer excellent studying, working and living conditions.
In an interdisciplinary environment of engineering, business, health and humanities subjects, we provide modern and innovative programmes of study and embody a culture of high quality, which is anchored in our mission statement.
In the Department of Social Work, Health and Media (SGM) at the Magdeburg site, we place particular emphasis on open interaction with one other, collaborative working, good support for students and excellent teaching quality. Subject to the availability of funding, the SGM is seeking to fill the following full-time post (16 lecture periods per week) by 1 April 2023 for an unlimited period:
The Role:
We are seeking to appoint an individual – ideally a journalist – to provide primarily practice-oriented teaching on our Journalism programmes. In particular, we are looking for someone who wants to contribute to the further development of courses in the field of digital journalism, both for the Bachelor ’s programme and for the Master ’s programme in Journalism.
In addition, we expect you to participate in tasks related to organising teaching and studies, and further develop study programmes.
Naturally, you will demonstrate a commitment to technology and knowledge transfer. Work or collaboration in applied research is desirable.
Your Profile:
You have up-to-date industry skills in the production and/or development of new digital offerings in journalism. Specialisation in one subject area is highly desirable.
You have proven practical and up-to-date professional experience in journalism and are familiar with theory-practice transfer in this field.
You hold a university degree in journalism, communication studies, media studies, humanities or social sciences and have successfully completed a doctorate.
You are able to communicate content in an understandable and practice-focused manner, whether in person, online or in hybrid/blended learning scenarios. Experience in teaching at university level or in comparable teaching situations is an advantage, as is experience in working with learning platforms. Ideally, you can lead student groups and empathise with the concerns of students.
Through your ability to work in a team and your confident communication skills, you show your enjoyment of working together with students and of constructive discourse for the benefit of the university.
You can demonstrate particular achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods in the relevant activity areas of the professorship. You attained these achievements during professional practice of at least three years outside the higher education sector.
Experience in acquiring third-party funding and supervising research projects is advantageous. Given the increasing internationalisation of the university, you will also have an excellent command of written and spoken English, in addition to fluency in the German language. International experience is also desirable.
General Conditions of Employment:
The conditions of employment for professors are contained in section 35 of the current version of the Higher Education Act of the State of Saxony-Anhalt (HSG LSA) and the current version of the Appointment Regulation of Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences.
These include a university degree, pedagogic ability and a particular aptitude for scientific work, which will generally have been demonstrated by the acquisition of a good quality doctoral degree.
Over and above this, particular achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods must have been demonstrated in professional practice, of which three years must have been outside a higher education setting.
