The Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University seeks to reappoint the position of
W 3 Professorship for Medical Informatics (f/m/d) (Successor to Prof. Dr. Thomas Ganslandt)
The professorship will represent the subject of biomedical informatics in its entire breadth in research and teaching and will works closely with the University Hospital Mannheim LLC at the interface to patient care. The future holder of the position heads the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the Center for Preventive Medicine and Digital Health Baden-Württemberg (CPD-BW). As an additional duty, the professorship shall play a key role in setting up a research unit of the Fraunhofer Society at the Medical Campus Mannheim and act as director of said unit.
Applicants have extensive and in-depth knowledge in the analysis, harmonization and management of distributed and heterogeneous data from the scientific field and medical health care (i.e. hospital IT). Accordingly, applicants must demonstrate core expertise in developing IT solutions for the implementation of interoperable processes aimed at supporting disease modeling, visualization of medical data and medical decision support. The successful applicant will need extensive experience in handling complex and large amounts of data (big data) obtained from healthcare context and bringing them into suitable medical data ecosystems. The professorship is expected to interact with the internal research priority programs of the faculty as well as with the other sections within the CPD-BW. An emphasis is placed on the establishment of cooperations within Heidelberg University, e.g. with the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) and the University Computer Center (URZ) in order to advance the development of a joint university data management. The willingness to represent the Mannheim Campus in research activities within the national medical informatics initiative is expected.
Prerequisites for application are a completed university degree in medicine, the natural sciences, mathematics and computer science or engineering, a qualified doctorate and - in accordance to § 47 (2) of the Baden-Württemberg State University Act “Landeshochschulgesetz Baden-Württemberg“ - a habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship or a comparable scientific qualification. Applications from computer scientists, mathematicians or physicians are equally welcome. International visibility with excellent performance in research and teaching, a relevant management experience and team-leading expertise, successful acquisition of third-party funding and didactic competence are expected. The position requires the ability and willingness to cooperate with regional and supra-regional commercial enterprises and a strong commitment to academic self-administration.
The professorship is offered as a permanent position. If the general civil service and budgetary requirements are met, the appointment to the professorship is usually made directly to the civil servant relationship for life. Separate contracts are concluded for the activities of the University Hospital Mannheim GmbH and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
