The University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) aims to consistently advance its focal research areas neurosciences, cardiovascular medicine, and oncology by integrating approaches from translational medicine. This is achieved in part as a partner location of the health research centers German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), and the German Center for Child and Adolescent Health (DZKJ). On the Göttingen Campus, the UMG is tightly networked with the institutes of natural and biological sciences of the university, as well as with the non-university research institutions at Göttingen Campus.

For the position, an experienced leader with a nationally and internationally visible scientific profile is sought, who can scientifically represent and further develop the research foci of participatory and intercultural bioethics, age and dementia ethics, and ethics of digitalization in health care. Applicants are expected to be able to connect with the focal research areas of the University Medical Center and the University of Göttingen, to build up university and state-wide research networks, and to be internationally networked. With the retirement of the current Director of the Department of Medical Ethics and History of Medicine, the leadership of the Institute shall be transferred to the holder of the position advertised herein.
Applicants should have an interdisciplinary education in both life sciences and applied ethics. Excellent knowledge of socio-empirical and participatory methods as well as their integration into bioethical issues, proven through publications in relevant journals and externally funded projects, is expected. Applicants should have experience in leading larger working groups and involvement in relevant expert committees.
The willingness to participate in academic self-administration, a high level of commitment in teaching and in the supervision of young scientists, as well as experience in the competitive acquisition of third-party funds, especially in interdisciplinary collaborative projects, are required.
Prerequisites for the appointment are a positively evaluated junior professorship, the “habilitation” or equivalent scientific achievements as well as an independent scientific profile beyond that with corresponding experience in university teaching in the field of ethics and history of medicine. All other requirements for the appointment of university professors are laid out in the current version of § 25 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Lower Saxony.
