Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK
This is an existing position which is to be re-filled.

The Institute of Machine Tools and Factory Management at the Technische Universität Berlin (IWF) currently has 12
professorships and more than 300 staff in research and teaching. Our research and teaching examine the technology
and management of industrial factory operations and encompass both the development of process technologies and
production plants as well as their networking and modeling using information technology. The Chair of Machine Tools
and Manufacturing Technology within the IWF develops and optimizes concepts, assemblies, and components of
machine tools as well as analyzes and prepares innovative manufacturing technology and manufacturing process chains.
Fraunhofer IPK stands for 40 years of global excellence in production science. Our over 400 employees conduct applied
research and development across the whole process spectrum of the manufacturing industry – from product
development, production processes, maintenance of investment goods, and product recycling to the design and
management of manufacturing companies.
The Institute of Machine Tools and Factory Management at the Technische Universität Berlin and the Fraunhofer
Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK work closely together at the Production Technology Center
Berlin. The combination of basic research and practical teaching at the IWF and applied research and development at
Fraunhofer IPK uniquely enables closed research and development of production technology solutions from the initial
idea to their implementation in practice.
In addition to upholding scientific excellence, the postholder is tasked with the scientific management of over 500 staff
members at three locations. Key responsibilities of this role are achieving visibility of both the academic chair and
Fraunhofer IPK among clients from industry and public funding agencies as well as ensuring the generation of the
corresponding project funds by strategically aligning the Fraunhofer Institute with the needs of the funding bodies.

Managing and directing the academic chair and its staff; commitment to the advancement of junior scholars, in
particular encouraging support for women and social diversity in research and teaching as well as knowledge and
technology transfer; developing initiatives for internationalization; skills to act on issues of gender and diversity and
sustainability; committee work

Strategically orienting Fraunhofer IPK within the market, establishing institute objectives and a quality policy, as well
as monitoring the achievement of objectives; responsible for personnel management

Designing research for systems solutions, individual technologies, and services for digital integrated production;
comprehensive support for companies throughout the entire value-added chain

Expanding networking with funding agencies and strengthening strategic business areas
This joint position requires the postholder to competently represent the described areas of focus in research and
teaching as well as research and technology management vis-à-vis public research funding and research stakeholders
from industry, science, and politics; you are also responsible for fostering a strategic relationship between the university
and the Fraunhofer institute.
Requirements:

The hiring requirements are based on the requirements defined in Section 100 cf. of the Berlin Higher Education Act
(BerlHG). These include a university degree in mechanical engineering/production technology, a particular aptitude for

Additional academic achievements (positively evaluated junior professorship, habilitation or equivalent qualification).

Outstanding scientific achievements in the field of production technology, particularly in the development of machine
tools and manufacturing technology.

Several years management experience in industry and with large, interdisciplinary research groups, experience
strategically planning, acquiring, and conducting large-volume national and international research and development
projects in different operational areas, experience acquiring and conducting practical R&D projects, as well as an
ability to improve the efficiency of development processes and technology valorization.

Experience in the area of the advancement of junior scholars. Additionally, you possess key skills for knowledge and
technology transfer as well as an understanding of gender and diversity issues and familiarity with topics of
sustainability. International working and teaching experience, experience in international projects, and a strong
network with actors in science policy are preferred. Excellent English skills are mandatory. Non-German-speaking
applicants are expected to demonstrate commitment to learning German short term.
