University Professor (W3) Digital Aircraft Development
Technische Universität Hamburg (TUHH)
In a joint selection process, Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and German Aerospace Center (DLR) are offering at the earliest possible point in time the position of a
UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR (W3) DIGITAL AIRCRAFT DEVELOPMENT
combined with the position of
DIRECTOR INSTITUTE OF SYSTEM ARCHITECTURES IN AERONAUTICS
Ref. No.: P-19-08
The successful candidate will be appointed professor at TUHH and will be granted leave of absence for the purpose of heading the DLR Institute in Hamburg. The future holder of this position is expected to fulfill teaching duties of 2 SWS (weekly lecturing hours per semester) in the study programs of Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH).
The DLR institute, which is currently being set up, shall establish the new field of research "System Architectures in Aeronautics" which is spanning across all levels from the transport system via the aircraft till its subsystems. Novel architectures will be investigated also for virtual products, which will offer enhanced efficiency and safety across the entire lifecycle. Furthermore, the interface between virtual aircraft design and digitized production (industry 4.0) is targeted, in order to enable production-driven design in particular for cabin and fuselage. Cabin research will constitute a focus of research addressing both, a more synergetic integration of cabin and fuselage into the aircraft (architecture) as well as revolutionary new concepts. A further focus will be placed at the integration of automated systems into fuselage, cabin and payload systems. An extensive collaboration with various experts inside and outside DLR will be the key to model the digital thread and thus make a significant contribution to digitalization in aeronautics.
The following topics will be the core areas of research:
Production driven aircraft design and systems integration
Automation, energy and safety
Virtual products and virtual supply chains
Design and industrialization of cabin systems
The DLR institute will perform basic research as well as applied research mainly for aeronautics, but also support the DLR institutes focusing on aerospace, transport, and energy.
Close cooperation is expected with the TUHH in the area of digital aircraft development, amongst others in the form of a joint scientific working group. Further cooperation at the TUHH with the main research areas "Aeronautics" and "Logistics and Mobility" as well as the cross-university computer science platform ahoi.digital is highly desired. Cooperation with other research institutions focusing on these topics is expected.
We are looking for a candidate with international scientific credentials in digital aircraft development and computer science, excellent expertise in research and development in several of the above mentioned fields, and good contacts to relevant industry and research. Experience in the initialization and coordination of interdisciplinary cooperation with partners from research and industry is expected. Several years of industrial experience and know-how in the development and management of a larger team are desirable. Furthermore, expertise in the development of research fields is desirable. The candidate is expected to have very good didactic skills in order to meet the teaching obligations in the bachelor‘s and master‘s degree programs of TUHH.
